Charleston is the second largest and first oldest city in South Carolina. The historic city center lies on a peninsula formed by two rivers, the Ashley and the Cooper, which flow into the Atlantic. The city was captured without significant damage during the Civil War, so Old Charleston retains century-old buildings, beautiful churches whose spiers rise above the low-rise buildings, and a colorful harbor. With the atmosphere of the good old south, Charleston is reminiscent of its neighbor Savannah.

A little history

Charles Town, as the city was first called, was founded in 1670 by Anthony Ashley Cooper on the west bank of the river - a few kilometers northwest of present-day Charleston. In the 90s In the same century, English colonists built fortified walls around the settlement, and although the walls were destroyed thirty years later, the area enclosed by them with cobblestone streets and old houses still remains in the city. As well as notable neighborhoods built in Colonial, Georgian, Federal, Italianate, Victorian and Greek styles.

Charleston was nicknamed the holy city due to its many churches, and also due to the fact that it became one of the few places in the original 13 colonies that was tolerant of French Huguenots and Jews.

How to get to Charleston

Charleston International Airport is located approximately 12 miles northwest of the city center and is accessible by shuttle or city bus. The city is located almost in the middle of the Atlantic coast of South Carolina and is easily accessible by highway, Amtrak train or Greyhound bus.

Activities and attractions in Charleston

The Charleston Museum on Meeting Street is located directly across from the visitor center. But perhaps even more interesting is the Gibbs Museum of Art, which opened in 1905 and has a stunning collection of more than 10,000 pieces of fine art. These are predominantly works by American authors, and special emphasis in the exhibitions is placed on masterpieces by Charlestonians and southerners in general.

Fort Sumter National Monument is the very place where the Civil War began. The fort is located on an island, and ferries go here from Liberty Square in downtown or from Patriots Point near Mount Pleasant. The ferry takes about half an hour to reach the fort. The fort itself is actually in ruins, but there are signs and signs everywhere describing what was located and where. In addition, there is a museum on site.

Patriots Point is to the right of the Ravenel Bridge. The Naval Museum is home to an impressive display of weapons including the USS Yorktown and the submarine Clalagmore. In addition, the museum has an airplane and a restored camp from the Vietnam War. And on Sullivan's Island, not far from the city, there is a second old fort - Moultrie, which was actively used during the Revolution and the Civil War.

The charming and ancient French Quarter is one of the most ancient and colorful in the city. It is located between Market and Tradd streets, Meeting and the waterfront. It was here that at one time there stood a wall built by English colonists. The French Quarter is home to many art galleries, as well as St. Philip's Church, a French Huguenot church, and many beautiful historic homes.

3 things to do in Charleston:

  1. Be sure to see the amazing Angel Oak, which is already more than 1000 years old.
  2. Walk along the cobbled Longitude Lane, an old colonial alley that was laid exactly along the meridian line.
  3. Admire the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, completed in 2005, the longest cable bridge in the United States.

Another interesting city landmark is the fireproof building on Meeting Street. It was built in 1827 and is believed to be the oldest fireproof structure in the United States today. The building was designed by Robert Mills, the first born American (Charlestonian) to train as an architect. The building was constructed primarily of monolithic stone in a simple Greek style with Doric columns. Today the house houses the South Carolina Historical Society.

White Point Garden is a beautiful park located at the southern end of the peninsula. There are wonderful views from here, especially along the Battery Boardwalk along the Cooper River. Elegant mansions lined the promenade, terribly expensive. Another nice green place to relax is Waterfront Park, which stretches from Vendue Range to Water Street along the Cooper River. And from the shipyard in Vendue Range there is a good view of the Ravenel Bridge.

A special place to visit in Charleston is the Market, the old shopping district at the top of Market Street. According to popular urban legend, slaves were never traded at this market (the remains of a slave market can be seen next door, a few blocks away). One way or another, today it is a more than fertile place for tourists, where everything is sold: from sweets and cotton candy to crocodile skin wallets.

The city has several good beaches. The most convenient, simple tourist of them is Folly Beach. More sophisticated options include the beaches of Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms. Warm water and soft surf without wind or waves attract many vacationers here - especially in late spring and early autumn.

Charleston churches

When you're in Charleston, you can't ignore the city's many churches. The beautiful white French Protestant church is one of only two remaining Huguenot churches in the United States. It was built in 1844 in the Gothic Revival style, and a year later a unique organ was purchased for the church, created in New York, with the same tone as classical baroque instruments. St. Matthew's Lutheran Church was built in 1840 with the participation of 50 townspeople with German roots who wanted to pray in their native language. It is distinguished by a typical Gothic pointed spire 78 m high, wonderful stained glass windows and an organ.

The First Presbyterian Church on Meeting Street is known as the "Silent Church" because its bells were melted down for Confederate cannon during the war. St. Philip's Episcopal Church was built in 1836 and acquired its beautiful tiered spire in 1850. The city is also home to one of the oldest synagogues in the United States, a Greek Revival building dating back to the 1740s.

Charleston Events

The Spoleto Festival in June is considered one of the best art festivals in the United States. It was organized “based on” the festival in the Italian town of the same name by composer Giancarlo Menotti. The festival also has a “little brother” - Piccolo Spoleto, which takes place at the same time.

The fall St. James Pumpkin Festival takes place on St. James Avenue, on Goose Creek. This annual October event features a charity pumpkin sale on weekdays and various festival events on weekends, with music and street food. Also in October, the Taste of Charleston festival is definitely worth checking out - the city is known for its excellent cuisine, especially seafood. And in January, the city hosts the Lowcountry Oyster Festival.

We headed south on Highway 17. Our route was to Florida. But we simply had to stop in Charleston. Moreover, in this city of southerners, typical for the USA, there is something to see - many interesting places and, in my opinion, it is worth devoting more than one day to it. Although we didn't succeed.

If you enter Charleston from the north on Highway 17, the first attraction is the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, where the main exhibit is the USS Yorktown CV-10. It is one of 24 Essex class aircraft carriers built by the United States. She was launched in April 1943 and saw action in the Pacific during World War II. In addition, he was a participant in the Vietnam War in the mid-60s, and also ensured the landing of the Apollo 8 spacecraft.

Today, only four aircraft carriers of this type remain. All of them, of course, are presented in the form of museums. One is moored at Pier 86 in New York City; another, who participated in the search and delivery to shore of the Apollo 11 crew with Neil Armstrong - near San Francisco; and one more – residents and guests of the city of Corpus Christi in Texas can visit. Yorktown dropped anchor in Charleston, among yachts and other US Navy ships.

The length of the ship is 265 meters, width 45 meters. On board the aircraft carrier Yorktown you can accommodate 103 aircraft of various types - airplanes and helicopters.

Another notable landmark of Charleston is the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, built in 2005.

This is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the United States. Its length is 4000 meters, and its largest span is 471 meters. Until 2011, it was also considered the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America.

Charleston was founded by the British in 1670 and naturally, the European style with its narrow streets is clearly visible in the old part of the city. This is a typical US southern city with colonial architecture and lots of palm trees. The historic city center is located on a peninsula that overlooks Charleston Harbor (Charleston Harbor). The city has many picturesque streets that are pleasant to stroll along on foot. Many bus tours begin from the Charleston Visitor Center, located in the historic part of the city on Meeting Street. In addition to excursions by bus, you can take a ride through the old part of the city on a horse-drawn carriage. This excursion is much more enjoyable if it is not too hot or raining.

An architectural feature of Charleston is that the facades of some houses are very narrow.

This is due to the fact that in the 19th century, Charleston was one of the most prosperous cities in the American South, and the government decided to replenish the treasury by introducing an increased tax on luxury buildings, tying the tax rate to the width of the facade of the house. By building such structures, which are not typical for us, residents simply avoided paying taxes, leaving the usable area of the house unchanged. But this, of course, does not apply to the houses of wealthy colonialists.

Many of them became museums of “liberated life.”

I would like to make a small digression. There is plenty of parking in the city, but finding a parking space near the historical sights of the old part of the city can be difficult. In paid parking lots, 30 minutes of parking will cost, if I'm not mistaken, 2 dollars. On Murray Boulevard, East Battery and near the aquarium you can park your car for free, but it’s very difficult to find places there. Yes, and try not to park your car near poles, otherwise the seagulls might crap on it so hard that you’ll have to go to the car wash.
The South Carolina Aquarium is located in Charleston.

But after visiting the second largest city in the world, I didn’t want to go there.
Nearby there are several companies that offer cruises to Fort Sumter, with the capture of which began the American Civil War of 1861-1865.

Cruises are different: only around the bay, extended throughout the Charleston harbor with and without a visit to the fort, on a small boat or on a yacht

Or on a ship like this

In general, choose which one you like. By the way, from the water there is a beautiful view of the embankment of the historical center.

A mile from the coast, on Shute Foley Island, there is one of the three forts that were part of the city’s defense line against aggression from the sea - Pinckney Castle. At first it was an earthen fort, the construction of which began in 1797. It received its name in honor of Revolutionary War hero Charles Pinckney. Construction of the Pinckney Castle Ford was completed in early 1804, but already in September it was almost completely destroyed by a strong hurricane. It was restored again by 1810, but using stone masonry.

Charleston's most famous defensive structure is Fort Sumter. Its construction began in 1829 and it is the “youngest” fortification of the city. Construction of Fort Sumter was not fully completed when the siege began in 1861. At that time, the fort was a pentagon-shaped brick fortification designed to accommodate 650 men and 135 guns in three tiers. The height of the three-story fort was 15 meters, the length of the sides was from 52 to 58 meters, and the thickness of the wall was 1.5 meters. Now it looks like this.

The first in the line of defense of Charleston was Fort Moultrie, which the Americans began to build in 1776 on Sullivan's Island.

Interestingly, in 1827, the famous American writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe served at Fort Moultrie. And the events he described in the story “The Gold Bug” take place on Sullivan Island. By the way, Sullivan's Island has the most expensive houses in Charleston.

But this is not due to the pomp of the place or the settlement of the rich, but to the nature of the soil - it is sandy and very expensive insurance due to the high probability of hurricanes. So only wealthy people can afford a house here.

After walking around and enjoying the color of the city, we moved on. An amazing “journey” awaited us

Charleston South Carolina is a city that is a keeper of history, an open-air museum, here every street and house is imbued with many years of history, unique architecture that gives Charleston special shades of charm and a bit of European character.

Charleston South Carolina

The city is located on the Atlantic coast in South Carolina between the Cooper and Ashley rivers. All Americans should visit this city to study the history of the country first-hand, so to speak.

Story

The city was founded by English colonists in 1670, and named after King Charles II - Charles Towne, later renamed Charleston, which grew from a colonial port into a wealthy city by the mid-eighteenth century. In the mid-nineteenth century, Charleston's economy flourished due to its busy seaport as well as numerous rice, cotton, and coffee plantations.

In April 1861, Fort Sumter near Charleston was fired upon by soldiers, signaling the start of the bloodiest Civil War in history. Charleston was very slow to recover from the destruction of the war, but it became one of the city's main goals due to the huge list of historically significant buildings, so Charleston was forced to restore damaged buildings instead of replacing them.

After the war, the city became less and less dependent on the agricultural industry, and gradually rebuilt its economy towards trade and industry. During the first decades of the 1900s, Charleston's industrial and port activities boomed, and later tourism, a naval base, and the medical industry became the main sources of capital. Today, approximately 4,510,000 people visit Charleston annually.

Walk through the historical center or cart tour.

Tour Downtown Charleston by Wagon

Every square meter of Charleston is literally imbued with history? so would I recommend taking a tour? if this is var first visit. After all, you will agree that it is more interesting with a guide. He will show you the most interesting places in the center of Charleston and tell you many educational stories. There are both walking and horseback tours. Should you choose? which one is closer to your liking. The cart tour lasts about 40 minutes and costs $22 (be sure to ask for a coupon at the hotel where you are staying and they will give you a $2 discount). As a last resort, go to Wikipedia and print out about the city, it will be more interesting to walk along the ancient streets.

Ghost Tour.

Yes, yes, he is the ghost tour. The fact is that Charleston turns into a ghost town at night. Many residents often encounter unexplained phenomena and often see the silhouettes of ghosts. In one of the hotels there is room 203, where the ghost of a girl lives. Believe it or not, this room is booked six months in advance. And the story here is this: The wife of one plantation owner fell in love with the seas and they secretly met at the hotel, in room 203. One day, when a sailor arrived from another business trip, the girl saw him in the arms of another and could not control her feelings and threw herself out of the window of that very room 203. Her ghost still haunts this hotel. Many guests of room 203 noticed that someone was rummaging through their personal belongings, especially women’s belongings. One woman who stayed in that famous room over Christmas couldn't find her underwear and went down to the reception to complain that someone had stolen her things. Imagine the surprise of the hotel workers and the guest herself that her bra was hanging on Rozhdestvenskaya Street in the hotel lobby! Whether you believe all this or not is up to you! The so-called Gost tours take place every evening and begin at 10 pm near the central Charleston market. It all depends on the guide you get and what stories he tells you. We were given special ghost detectors, some even signaled about ghosts.

Located next to a deep-water bay convenient for ships, Charleston, together with other towns in the region, forms an urban agglomeration with a population of more than 660 thousand people. The largest of the neighboring cities is North Charleston with a population of 97 thousand residents. Charleston and its neighbor to the north are too different to be considered a single city. If Charleston has an air of elitism, then North Charleston is decidedly a blue-collar, blue-collar working-class town.

Charleston was founded by the English in 1670 and has the charm of an old Southern town with many old houses, neighborhoods and historic sites. After more than three centuries, Charleston is still one of the largest ports on the East Coast, but its economy today is based on tourism. Around 4 million people come here every year to sightsee and enjoy the city's cultural and culinary delights.

North Charleston became a city in 1972, bringing together several suburbs. In the past it was a military town, today it is largely industrial. The naval base was closed nearly 20 years ago and many other military installations have been significantly reduced. The city's economy has recovered in recent years, driven by manufacturing and shipping. Also in North Charleston is the Boeing Dreamliner plant, where the Boeing 787 Dreamliner passenger aircraft are assembled. However, many of the region's iconic places and attractions are located in North Charleston, including the naval base and Charleston International Airport.

The central (historical) part of Charleston is located on a peninsula formed by the Ashley and Cooper rivers, which flow into the Atlantic Ocean. Numerous nearby islands protect the city from the open ocean. The Port of Charleston is one of the largest in the United States. It consists of 5 terminals, 2 of which are in Charleston, another 2 in North Charleston. The port, along with tourism, are Charleston's most important sources of income. Information technology and education are also developed.

Broad Street

The city was originally named Charles Town in honor of King Charles II of England. By the mid-18th century, Charleston had become a bustling commercial center and the largest city south of Philadelphia. However, after the American Civil War of 1861-1865, there was a noticeable decline in the development of the city. Perhaps this is what influenced the fact that the cityscape is very low, there are no multi-story buildings in Charleston. But the city has preserved entire historical quarters with picturesque streets and houses. A real treasure for the city are buildings and mansions of early colonial, Victorian, neo-Greek, classical federal and other architectural styles. The city's skyline is punctuated by numerous church spiers that stand out against the low-rise skyline.

Charleston attractions:

  • Fort Sumter - Fort Sumter was designed to protect the entrance to the harbor. It was here in 1861 that military events took place that led to the outbreak of the Civil War between North and South;
