If you were born and permanently live in Russia, you still have to prepare documents to confirm your child’s citizenship. This problem worries even more those who are married to a foreigner or have recently moved to Russia. We will try to answer some questions to make it easier for you to obtain civil status for your baby.

The registration procedure must be completed so that later there are no problems with the issuance of an internal or foreign passport for your son or daughter. You will be able to register at the clinic or on the waiting list for kindergarten without any problems, and you will be able to insure your baby.

You shouldn’t put off registering your status as a small citizen until later. Since 2002, this process has been carried out in a simplified manner, with a minimum package of documents provided.

There are specifics for registering citizenship for a child depending on his date of birth.

  1. Children born after 2007.
There is a simplified procedure for processing documents for children born in Russia. A special stamp is placed on the back of the birth certificate received for the first time. In order to receive it, you need to submit an application to the Federal Migration Service immediately after the birth of the baby. There is no need to pay a fee.
  2. Children who were born from 2002 to 2007.
To obtain citizenship in the Russian Federation, a different scheme was used. At that time, newborns were given birth certificate inserts with the official seal. They were confirmation of the status of a Russian citizen. Then they stopped issuing them. They have retained their significance to this day. When the time comes to receive a Russian passport, you will need to present this insert as full confirmation that your child is a citizen of the Russian Federation.
  3. Children born before July 1, 2002.
Usually it is enough to have a Russian birth certificate. Difficulties arise if one of the parents is not a citizen, or the whole family moves to Russia for permanent residence and goes through the paperwork process. We will tell you what to do in this case.

What is needed to obtain citizenship

To initiate registration, you must provide the following to the migration service department at your place of residence:

  • Application for assignment of the status of a citizen of the Russian Federation by birth in one copy. Done on official form. The sample can be taken at the FMS office or downloaded from the website. It can be filled out by hand in blue or black ink or printed from a computer. .
  • Birth certificate + photocopy.
  • Internal civil passports of parents (one of them) or legal representative and a photocopy of these documents.

Sample residence permit

These three documents are provided in any case. There are situations when these papers are not enough, for example, when the parent does not have a Russian passport, or it is in the process of being issued. Then you need to provide additionally:

  • Confirmation of residence in Russia - an extract from the house register, a certificate from the place of residence, a residence permit or temporary residence permit (copies).
  • Parents' written consent to obtain citizenship - if both or one of them are citizens of another country, and the baby was born in Russia. Certified by a notary.
  • Passports of the adoptive parents + copy - if the baby is adopted, and both of them (or one of them) are citizens of the Russian Federation.
  • Confirmation of the change of the parents' surname, if this happened (during remarriage, for example).

How does obtaining citizenship for a child depend on age?

If you have just become parents, do not put off obtaining citizenship for a long time. In your situation, you just need to contact the migration service department shortly after birth with passports and the baby’s birth certificate. They will give you a special stamp and the problem will be solved. You don't even have to pay a fee.

If you did not manage to do this on time or arrived from another country with an already grown-up child, you will have to go through the registration procedure in full. In this case, in addition to the above documents, you will have to provide a photo measuring 30x40 mm (2 pcs).

If at the time of application the teenager is 14 years old, he must give his consent to be assigned the status of a citizen of the Russian Federation in writing. Consent is certified by a notary.

In this case, a fee of 3,500 rubles is paid. When submitting documents, you must attach a receipt for payment.

The fee is not paid if the title of citizen is granted by right of birth in Russia. If adults themselves obtain Russian citizenship and at the same time ask to grant it to their minor children, the fee is reduced to 1,000 rubles.

Registration period

If there are no complicating factors, the case for granting citizenship status is considered within six months according to the law. Under obvious circumstances and a simplified registration procedure, the decision is made quickly, sometimes even in one day.

The stamp on the birth certificate for children born after 2007 is an example of such expedited processing. If additional information is required, or if you need to wait to see if the parents will show up in the case of a foundling, the decision is postponed.

What to do if your baby was born abroad

There are situations when parents are on contract service abroad or come to another state to give birth in a specialized clinic. In this case, even a newborn can be issued a foreign passport by employees of the Russian Embassy. Then it will serve as the basis for obtaining Russian citizenship.

Information about the baby is entered into the parents’ foreign or diplomatic passport - this is another option to legalize civil status. They are certified by the signature of an authorized representative and a seal.

A stamp confirming the assignment of Russian citizenship can also be affixed at the consulate on the translation of the baby’s birth certificate into Russian. If the child was born before 02/06/2007, an insert in the birth certificate could be issued for him by employees of the Migration Service or a diplomatic mission.

The state protects the rights of a young person born abroad and recognizes as valid marks and documents issued by diplomatic organizations outside the Russian Federation.

We hope you now understand that obtaining the status of a citizen of the Russian Federation is a necessary procedure. Do not put off submitting your application and documents. Otherwise, you will then have to spend much more time and effort so that your heir receives a passport from a great country.
