A little history

The official name Bangkok means “city of wild plum” in Thai. Once upon a time, this was the name of a small fishing village on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, on the site of which a city was later founded. Another name was given to Bangkok during the solemn ceremony of declaring it the capital of the state. The full name of Bangkok is the longest city name in the world: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit), which means “city of angels, great city, city - eternal treasure, impregnable city of the god Indra, majestic capital of the world, endowed with nine precious stones, happy city, full of abundance, grand royal palace, reminiscent of the divine abode, where reigns a reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn.” However, Bangkok residents simply call their city Krung Thep (“city of angels”).

The historical center of the capital is located on the island of Rattanakosin, formed by the Chao Phraya River, its channel and surrounding areas. Since Bangkok began to be built during the time of threat of attack from the Burmese, security was the most important, and therefore the first buildings appeared on the island. Later, when the problem of invasions was solved, Bangkok began to grow (for example, temples from the mid-19th century are already located outside Rattanakosin). On the island itself today there are the oldest buildings - the royal palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, some other temples and historical monuments. Among them are the remains of the 19th century city wall and the first residential buildings. The parliament, most government organizations, and ministries are also located in the historical part of the capital. However, there are also buildings erected in the last decade, and modern monuments, for example, the Democracy Monument, erected in memory of the events of 1992.

Bangkok has a strong Chinese diaspora. Initially, the Huaqiao, immigrants from China, lived on the island where the royal palace is now located. But as soon as the construction of Bangkok began, they were all evicted, allowing them to settle 3 km downstream. This is how Bangkok Chinatown came into being. In the 19th century it was the main trading center of the country, and the Chinese controlled a significant part of the market in the state. Today, Chinatown is not so much an ethnic as a historical district, and one of the most prestigious in the capital. And only a few large temples remained as a legacy from the times of prosperity.

Modern city

The first impression of Bangkok is that of a modern urbanized city, where business life is bustling with inexhaustible energy. The appearance of the capital was strongly influenced by England, although Thailand was not colonized by the British Empire. It seems that Bangkok consists entirely of sky-piercing skyscrapers, office buildings, luxury apartments, hotels and huge shopping centers. But this is just one of the many faces of Bangkok...

Over 7 million people now live in Bangkok, the capital located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Bangkok is one of the most dynamically developing cities in the world and is one of the largest international centers of tourism and business. The royal family lives here, the state government and regional administration are located, and the main industrial, commercial and financial enterprises are concentrated. More than 2 million tourists visit Bangkok every year. It offers more than 200 first-class hotels (including the world's largest hotel with 3,700 beds) and a huge number of restaurants. Bangkok is the capital of Thailand, and all the infrastructure described above proves that the city has such status for a reason.

The Silom district, which takes its name from Silom Street (Bangkok's Wall Street), is the modern center of Bangkok.

Most of the offices of large companies and in fact half of all foreign embassies are located here. The tallest buildings and the most expensive hotels are concentrated here. Of course, there are also inexpensive hotels in Silom, but budget tourists still prefer to stay either in the historical center or in Sukhumvit. On Siphaya and Surawong streets in the northern part of Silom there are numerous shopping arcades, individual shops, and supermarkets.

To the north is the so-called Siam Square, the shopping center of Bangkok. The largest supermarkets are concentrated here - Siam Discovery Center, Colloseum Dep. Store, Tokyo, World Trade Center. In them, as in smaller shops, prices compare favorably with prices in tourist areas and are undoubtedly lower than in Silom.

Just to the east of the main cluster of shopping arcades is the Ploenchit area - the “meeting point” of the most expensive hotels (eg Hilton International) and the rest of the embassies (the first, as already mentioned, on Silom), including the US, UK and Switzerland.

Sukhumvit is the most popular among tourists: those who come to Bangkok settle mainly here. The name of the area was given by its main street, from which the highway leading southeast to the Bangkok-Cambodia border begins. The main feature of the area: there are few busy intersections; the main street is crossed only by small streets, which almost always end in a dead end. There is practically no traffic (despite the fact that the Sukhumvit highway is quite noisy and wide), but there are many - if not the lion's share - of the capital's go-go bars and pubs. Therefore, it is not surprising that life is in full swing there at night.

Shopping is an integral part of life in Bangkok. Shopping in Bangkok, in addition to moral satisfaction, also saves you money. In addition to numerous souvenirs, people usually buy jewelry, world-famous Thai silk, leather goods, custom-made clothing, antiques, teak wood, ceramics and bronze items. Every tourist, as a rule, strives to bring home live Thai orchids and exotic fruits. There are all possibilities for shopping in Bangkok: small shops in the wholesale markets in Bo Bay and Pratunam, wholesale warehouses and trade offices selling clothes and shoes in the vicinity of the Mahanak Canal, huge shopping centers in the Rachada Street area. Special mention should be made of the large supermarkets Yaohan, Robinson, Zen and Tokyo - they are located next to each other, unlike similar department stores scattered throughout the city.

What to see

Bangkok is the culinary capital and is truly a paradise for foodies. Thai cuisine has the greatest selection of delicious fresh seafood dishes. Fish, crabs, huge lobsters and tiger shrimps can be prepared both in a spicy (Thai) version and in accordance with European cuisine recipes. Not only the variety of the menu is impressive, but also the abundance of all kinds of restaurants, from simple street ones to elegant and expensive ones. For example, on Rachada Street there is the world-famous open-air restaurant Tum Nuk Thai, listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest in the world. It occupies such a large area that the waiters are forced to move around on roller skates. And since Tum Nuk Thai can accommodate 1,200 visitors at a time, this establishment is simply ideal for organizing large parties and hosting tourist groups. Bangkok also has several floating restaurants, making it easy to combine a delicious dinner with a river cruise.

We provide a list of several good restaurants serving non-Thai cuisine:

  • It is better to try Indian dishes at Indian Hut (311/2-5 Suriwongse Rd, tel.: 02-635-7876-7, 02-237-8799);
  • unsurpassed Chinese dishes are served at Mei Jiang (the Peninsula Bangkok, 333 Charoen Nakom Rd, Thonburi, tel.: 02-861-2888), Shang Palace (at the Shangri-La Hotel), Silk Road (at the Plaza Athenee Hotel), The Chinese Restaurant (at the Grand Hyatt Erawan);
  • seafood delicacies are offered at Scoozi (160 Sribumpen Condo Home, Soi Sribumpen, Yannawa, tel.: 02-240-2070) and Seafood Palace (348 Sukhumvit Road, Asoke Square, tel.: 02-653-1145);
  • According to the traditions of European cuisine, they cook at International Beerhouse (6 Soi 23 Sukhumvit Road, tel.: 02-661-7591), Tilac Restaurant (38 Soi 1 Sukhumvit Road, tel.: 02-255-6881), Le Banyan (59 Sukhumvit Soi 8, tel.: 02-253-5556), Le Café Siam (4 Soi Aksorn, Chua Ploeng Rd, tel.: 02-671-0030-1), Angelini Restaurant & Bar (at the Shangri-La Hotel).

As for entertainment, there are no problems with this in the capital of Thailand: there are traditional Thai dances, cocktail bars, karaoke, and discos. But the taste of real nightlife can only be experienced in Patpong. This area has been called a sexy Disneyland, but it should not be regarded solely as a cluster of hot spots. There are also good restaurants, a night market, and shops here. Patpong is divided into three zones: Patpong 1 and Patpong 2 are two streets running parallel to each other (the larger one is Soi Superstar); Patpong 3 is also called Silom 4 and is a dead end for gays. Bars open at different times, usually from 18-00, but there are also those that start work at 1 am. In Patpong you can meet not only tourists, but also local residents, however, foreigners especially love to visit this quarter: you can have dinner there, talk at a table in a cafe until the morning, and have fun, finding entertainment to suit your taste.

The resort of Bangkok is a must-visit for anyone who comes to relax in the city; it is extremely popular among tourists all over the world. You will surely remember your time here and fall in love with this wonderful city for the rest of your life.

There are a huge number of historical, religious and cultural monuments, a lot of entertainment, restaurants, bars, hotels for every taste and budget, picturesque oases of greenery and beaches.

So far I’ve only been to Thailand once – we went with friends for 2 weeks, 3 days of which we spent in Bangkok. The city is interesting and somewhat peculiar - for me, a European, it even seemed a little strange, although I still can’t explain why.

Where is the city of Bangkok?

Bangkok is the most Tomajor city of Thailand- his capital. Located in the central part of the country on the northern coast Gulf of Thailand. Language, of course, Thai.

  • Flight from Moscow it takes 9 hours to get to Bangkok;
  • From St. Petersburg – 10;
  • From Novosibirsk– 7,5;
  • From Hong Kong– 2.5 hours.

Please note that the above mentioned flight times are non-stop. You can get to the capital of Thailand by indirect flights 20 or more hours.

The area of the city is 1.5 thousand square kilometers. Its population, in turn, is 5 million 600 thousand people.

Bangkok has whole 50 districts. The smallest of them are located in the city center, while the largest are on the western and eastern outskirts. Several of the remote areas exceed a dozen central ones in area.

Bangkok divides in two river Chao Phraya. At the same time, the eastern part of the city is significantly larger in size than the western.

The capital of Thailand also plays the role of one of economic centers of Asia.

Where to stay and what to see

To say that the climate here is hot is to say nothing. IN Bangkok is very stuffy, and the air even in winter (I was on the New Year holidays) is warmed up to 30-35 degrees. How do they live here in the summer, when the temperature reaches 40 - I don't understand.

Hotel prices in Bangkok vary greatly. Here you can find a room for $500 per night, or $30 or even less. My friends and I stayed at Chatrium Residence Sathon Bangkok. A relatively good hotel, costing $40 for daily rent. But the price, of course, depends on the season.

There are relatively few attractions in the city. Liked most: Grand Palace, Royal Pantheon And Wat Pho Temple. The skyscraper also looks very cool MahaNakhon– it’s a pity that we weren’t able to visit it to look at the city from its highest point.

The capital of Thailand, Bangkok, has a lot of interesting things that it is better to get acquainted with before traveling. Then there will be no unforeseen difficulties during the trip, and only pleasant impressions will remain from your vacation.

The first thing that interests those who want to visit Bangkok is where this resort is located. It is the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand. Due to the peculiarities of its geographical location, it has become a major economic center of the country. In addition, it is a port with an area of 1.5 thousand square meters.

The city of Bangkok is located on the Chao Phraya River, not far from the Gulf of Thailand. Thais speak of the metropolis as a new regional hub that can compete with Singapore.

Full city name

Bangkok is a shortened version of the name. People all over the world use it. However, Thai schoolchildren are forced to memorize the full name of the country's main center from an early age. The fact is that the metropolis was called a long, inconvenient phrase. In Russian it roughly sounds like: “The city of angels, the eternal treasure, the impregnable fortress of God Indra, the great capital of the world, endowed with nine precious stones, the city of happiness, full of abundance, the grand Royal Palace, reminiscent of the divine abode where the reincarnated god reigns , a place donated by Indra and founded by Vishnukarn.” This toponym is unique. There is no longer one on the planet.

Agree that even an adult will hardly be able to remember this the first time!

Climate and weather

The climate here is subequatorial. This means that the weather depends on the seasons. The dry cool season lasts from November to the end of March. The sun always shines. The air temperature ranges from +28 to +31. It doesn't rain.

Then comes the dry hot season, which begins in April and ends with the onset of June. There is no rain, but the air warms up even more; the thermometer often shows a mark of +35. It is quite difficult to take excursion walks at this time.

And then it rains for the rest of the year. It’s true that there are no prolonged downpours. Basically, it starts to rain 3-4 times a week. When it stops, the sun is still shining. Some travelers prefer to go to the Kingdom at this time, believing that the change in weather contributes to a comfortable stay in the metropolis.

Story

Located in the country of Thailand, Bangkok is an example of how a metropolis and the largest economic center can grow from a village. Fishermen settled on the shores of the Gulf of Thailand. They fished and collected berries that resembled olives. The settlement was even called “Wild Plum Village.” The residents supplied the loot to Ayutthaya.

The Burmese came here in the mid-18th century. They destroyed Ayutthaya and thought about a new capital of Siam. As a result, the fishing settlement turned into a new center of the state. Ram I contributed to the further development of the policy. Palaces, monasteries, and administrative buildings were erected. The new settlement grew and prospered.

Now it is the main settlement of the Kingdom with a lot of attractions and religious sites that never cease to attract travelers. The economic recovery was facilitated by its favorable location. There is access to the sea and convenient land routes.

It is no wonder that the metropolis attracts tourists from all over the world. There are many reliable facts and beautiful legends associated with it.

It is expressed, first of all, in the close proximity of slums and magnificent palaces to each other.

Majestic temples have been preserved since the founding of the settlement, ultra-modern skyscrapers are the result of rapid construction in the 20th century.

There are thousands of accommodation options in Bangkok to suit every taste and budget. The best option would be a three- or four-star hotel located near the city center. We recommend choosing hotels that offer breakfast to guests. You can have lunch or dinner in the city, where there are many interesting establishments.

Attractions

There are so many attractions here that it would be impossible to get around in a week. The most interesting of them are the Royal Palace, Buddha statues, floating markets, an aquarium and many amusement parks for children.

The Royal Palace is the residence of the Thai king. Next to the palace there is a giant Lac Muang ritual swing - two huge teak pillars with a carved crossbar. On the territory of the Royal Palace is the Wat Pho temple complex of 95 pagodas.

There are more than 400 temples in Bangkok. The most famous of them is the Temple of the Dawn, or the Temple of the Dawn (Wat Arun). It is located on the territory of the Royal Palace, its walls are decorated with porcelain tiles, and figurines of Buddha and elephants are placed around. The Temple of the Dawn has long served as a home for the royal family, and now houses in its halls one of the largest Thai shrines: the statue of the Emerald Buddha. A small statue made from a single piece of jade attracts pilgrims from all over the world.

For those who come with children, we recommend visiting the largest aquarium in Asia, on the surface of which you can ride a glass-bottomed boat. More than 30 thousand fish and aquatic mammals live here - bright tropical fish from coral reefs, harsh sharks, sedate sea turtles and thousands of other amazing creatures.

You can see animals in the giant Safari World park. They calmly walk across vast territories, and spectators watch their lives from cars and buses. In addition to zebras, giraffes and lions, the park has a marine mammal area where dolphins perform. We also recommend that you visit the crocodile and snake farms and the elephant zoo.

You can look at Bangkok from above from Baiyok Sky Tower 2. It is located in the center of the capital and rises 305 meters above the city. There is a platform on the 84th floor that offers a fantastic view of the Asian city. Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand look especially impressive at night.

History buffs are advised to visit the National Museum, as well as the ancient capital of Siam. It is located 86 km from Bangkok, in the Ayutthaya Historical Park, famous for the ruins of ancient temples and the ruins of the Bang Pa In Palace. And to the west of Bangkok is the world's largest stupa, Phra Pathom Chedi, 127 meters high.

Temple of the Golden Buddha is the most visited place in Bangkok. Here is a three-meter statue of Buddha cast from pure gold. The eyes of the Buddha are made of pearls and black sapphires, the weight of the statue exceeds 5 tons.

Kitchen

Bangkok is the perfect place to experience Thai cuisine. There are both a large number of restaurants aimed at tourists, as well as regular cafes where locals eat daily.

Makashnits (scooters equipped for outdoor cooking) are located literally at every turn and offer a huge amount of Thai food to choose from. You will definitely remember lunch or dinner in a restaurant or cafe located on the banks of a river or canal. Here you can feed the huge fish that swim very close to the shore.

Another idea for a memorable lunch or dinner is to go to a restaurant located in a high-rise building, where you can not only eat, but also admire the beautiful city. If you miss European, Japanese, Chinese, Korean or other cuisines of the world, you can easily find the restaurant you are interested in in Bangkok.

Transport

Bangkok is the transport center of Thailand. Trains depart daily from the capital on 4 railway lines. Bangkok is also a port city. There are two airports in Bangkok (near the city) - Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. The airports accept direct flights from Russia and other countries of the world, and there are also many daily flights within Thailand.

Round-trip flights to Bangkok

Prices for tickets per person departing from Berlin are shown.

The most convenient way to travel inside the city is by water transport along canals and rivers - there are no traffic jams here. It is also easy to use public buses in the city, but it is worth noting that the roads of the capital of Thailand are more often stopped than driven. Another option for a more comfortable, but also more expensive way to travel is a taxi. On the roads of Bangkok you can see a huge number of bright sedans - these are taxis that can take you to anywhere in the city or beyond.

You can also rent a car or motorbike if you are going to stay in the capital of Thailand and actively move around the resort. We recommend that you choose to rent if you have an international driving license and experience driving on the roads of Thailand.

What to bring

Bangkok is one big market where you can buy whatever your heart desires. Bangkok's floating markets, which operate at night, are world famous. People visit the Chatuchak market in search of souvenirs for friends, exotic goods and vivid impressions. Bargaining is not only possible, but necessary!
