Promo room: what is it?

January 25, 2014

More and more often, lately, various hotel catalogs, tour operators and travel agencies have appeared a tempting offer for tourists: promo room. What it is? Let's figure it out and also analyze all the pros and cons of this phenomenon. After all, prices are often very tempting, but many tourists are afraid to buy a pig in a poke. So, what do hotels mean when they offer a promo room?

Why is it called “promo room”?

As a rule, a very ordinary hotel room is hidden under such a sign. This name comes from the English “promotion”, and, based on this, the Samtourist phenomenon should be assessed. First of all, we're talking about about a reduced cost per room due to some circumstances. There may be several of them - the hotel offers discounts, this room has disadvantages or shortcomings, the hotel is new and needs promotion, and is also not fully occupied for various reasons. Let's look at them all to understand a lot about the promo room.

What does this mean for the hotel itself?

There are rooms in various hotels that people refuse to stay in. For example, the room is located next to a noisy elevator or in some nook overlooking the courtyard or a construction site. It also happens that we are talking about apartments on the ground floor (everyone knows that tourists often try not to settle in such premises, for example, fearing theft, wanting to have a beautiful panoramic view from the window). Often we are talking about rooms of the smallest size or poor layout, lacking a balcony or facing directly onto a noisy pool or disco. Therefore, hotels try to sell rooms such as promo rooms.

What does this mean for the tourist himself?

What does this mean during low season?

When the flow of tourists subsides and the golden days for the hotel end, the discount period begins. People who freely dispose of their time have a huge choice. Now is when the real hunt for holiday accommodation begins, and this offer can provide quite a service. For example, during promotions, the definition of “standard promo room” may include ordinary rooms, even with a sea view. And you won’t have to pay an extra ten dollars to the administrator for them. IN good hotels This offer is available when early booking- and often these can be very good numbers. Such propositions are especially good when traveling to exotic countries, which need to be examined, and not sat in the room. Well, if the hotel is new, then quite often “promo room” simply means a promotional price during the promotional period.

Room types

The most common room types (graded by capacity)

  • DBL room(read: double room) - double room, usually with one large bed
  • TWIN room(twin room) - double room, usually with two separate beds
  • SNGL room(single room) - single room, inferior in area to the “double room”
  • QUAD room(quad room) - quadruple room
  • DUS room(double use single double single use) - a double room that is provided to one guest if the hotel does not have single (SNGL) rooms. Usually no different from DBL, it even costs the same.

Types of rooms by comfort level

  • STD- Standart room ( standard room) - as a rule, the most common category of rooms, making up the bulk of hotel rooms (exceptions occur in some countries (Thailand for example), in which the standards are often called Superior (SUP room), and the STD category is absent
  • SUP room- superior room. If the hotel has STD class rooms, the SUP room usually has a slightly larger area and may have some additional amenities such as: bathrobes, slippers, tea or coffee set
  • Deluxe room- deluxe room. The next room category after Superior. Most likely there will be even more and with an even wider range of services.
  • Junior suite- junior suite.
  • Suite- suite. More than a junior suite
  • Presidential Suite- usually the most big room in a hotel where mega-super-duper VIP guests, such as presidents or movie stars, stay.
  • ROH(run of the house) is a designation that the number type is not specified. Those. the hotel will accommodate you in any available room, most likely it will be a standard one, since it is the cheapest.

These are almost all the main types of rooms with one tricky exception. Recently, hotels in Turkey, Egypt and Greece have come up with another category PROMO room(promotional room), which is usually not described on hotel websites or in advertising catalogues. So what is mysterious PROMO room, the cost of which is lower than a standard room?

PROMO ROOM(promotion room) is, in essence, Standart room, but with some flaw. It could be a basement floor, or it could be a standard floor with a reduced area. It may be with an unusually small bathroom, with access to the reception or to the kitchen, i.e. noisy, etc.

If you need a room not only to sleep and shower, then I would advise you to avoid the promotional room category.

Power types

A great variety of shortened types of nutrition have been invented. Below I will give only the main ones that we encounter every day.

  • BB- breakfast (from the English Bed and Breakfast - bed and breakfast)
  • ABF- American breakfast, the same as buffet breakfast - i.e. Buffet
  • Continental breakfast- usually a modest version consisting of a bun, jam, yoghurt and tea or coffee. A common thing for cheap hotels in European capitals.
  • HB- half board (from the English half board). Breakfast and dinner.
  • HB+- extended half board. Drinks with dinner are included.
  • FB- full board. 3 meals a day. Breakfast lunch dinner
  • Fb+- extended full board. The price includes drinks at lunch and dinner.
  • A.I.- "all inclusive". 3 main meals a day + snacks and local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the day.
  • UAI- “ultra all inclusive”, imported (or local, but in imported bottles, as they like to cheat in Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia) alcoholic drinks are added to the delights of “all inclusive”. There should also be a wider range of free entertainment.

ATTENTION: in 99% of hotels, when staying on HB and FB, drinks are included in the price only at breakfast. Drinks for dinner are purchased separately.

Views from the window

Many hotels divide the number of rooms not only by room category, but also by the view that opens from the room windows. I will give again the most common options

So, what are these designations following the type of number:

  • G.V.- garden view view not of the sea
  • IV - inland view- same as GV
  • PV- pool view - rooms overlooking the pool
  • SV- sea view. Sea View
  • SSV-Side sea view- side sea view. Tricky thing. Because in such rooms you sometimes need to go out onto the balcony, stand on a stool, lean over the railing, and only then will you be able to see the sea. Be prepared for this J
  • O.V.- ocean view - ocean view
  • Sea front or Ocean Front- these are rooms or bungalows with a frontal view or even access to the sea, ocean

Over the past few years, travel agencies and hotels themselves (even 5 stars) have regularly offered their clients an interesting offer: promo room - a room at a very low cost.

Very tempting! But it’s also suspicious - why such prices? How to avoid getting into an unpleasant situation! After all, how many cases have been described by tourists when, even after paying for a standard room in a seemingly decent hotel, they are placed in a kennel without windows, without amenities and with mold on the walls!

You need to know as much as possible about this and take it into account when purchasing tours, especially to exotic countries!

Promo goes back to the English word promotion, which means promotion.

So, promo room. What is this?

This number:

  • with a promotional discount;
  • with any defects, and low price- this is good compensation for the inconvenience the client receives while living in the promo room.

Usually promo rooms are included in cheap tours. This type of room is suitable for those tourists who spend their entire vacation not at the hotel, but on the beach, shopping or on excursions. And here you can save a lot on the cost of the tour by staying in a promo room.

Upon check-in, they check that everything is in good order - shower, air conditioning, lighting.

And if the hotel has a lot of empty rooms, the client will probably be placed in a standard room with a window facing the sea, which will be a pleasant surprise.

When purchasing a tour with a promo room, exchange the room for the best option it is forbidden. Although some hotels accommodate their guests if there are rooms available.

What it is advisable to do before registration:

Promo room: what is it? Reasons for low cost

  • The hotel holds promotions with discounts to attract tourists.

Promo room: what is it? Why are such actions needed? This is beneficial for hotels (especially 5 stars) - they have very expensive accommodation services, and some rooms are empty. And the promo room promotion allows you to attract customers with a lower budget.

  • The hotel is new and needs promotion.
  • The hotel is not fully occupied due to low season.

When the period of mass arrival of tourists to this area ends, the number of guests is greatly reduced, and the time for significant discounts begins. And people who have a lot of free time or are not tied to their city (for example, retirees or freelancers) get the opportunity to have a great vacation for little money.

  • The proposed number has a number of disadvantages.

What are the disadvantages of a promo room?

A low price presupposes the presence of any deficiencies in the premises:

  • the building in which the room is offered is located very far from all places of entertainment and food;
  • very small area of the room (it may turn out to be a former storage room);
  • the room is located near a noisy elevator with a door slamming all night;
  • the room is located near a public toilet;
  • ground floor;
  • first floor (danger of theft, poor view from the window);
  • poor room layout;
  • only a wall, a vacant lot or a construction site is visible through the window;
  • no window at all;
  • no balcony;
  • the window looks directly onto a noisy dance floor;
  • bad furniture - old and rickety;
  • leaking sewer;
  • smell of dampness, mold on the ceiling.
