Sights of Taman worthy of mention are divided into three categories: archaeological, literary-historical and cultural-ethnographic. The first are associated with excavations of the ancient cities of Hermonassa and Tmutarakan; the second - with Russian military garrisons, the names of A.V. Suvorov and M.K. Lermontov; still others - with the local Cossacks, their museum and ethnographic complex.

In general, traveling around Taman is very convenient. All main attractions of Taman as if they “stretched out in a row” along the seashore, that is, they can be examined one after another, without inventing complex routes, but simply moving from west to east (well, or from east to west - as you like). And the “string” is not long, about five kilometers, which is not a distance for an experienced traveler.

However, it is better to study the sights of Taman not “by convenience”, but by chronology, which is what banal logic requires. After all, modern Taman is a descendant of a distant Greek ancestor, the city of Hermonassa. Well, a little less distant, but already Slavic - the city of Tmutarakan. Some people are still convinced that Tmutarakan is just a harmless curse word, meaning “an utter wilderness, located in an unknown place.” It is worth visiting Taman and making sure that this is a misconception.

In 2012, the most important date for the Cossacks was celebrated in Taman - 220 years from the day the first Cossack naval landing set foot on this land during.

Ancient city of Hermonassa

So, let's start our journey from the center of the settlement Hermonassa. An excavation site clinging to the steep bank, about three hundred meters by one hundred, is the historical core of the city, antique Hermonassa, now inhabited exclusively by archaeologists. If an idle tourist has desire and perseverance, if he is hardworking and unpretentious in everyday life, then he may well join them tent city. True, in this case he will move from the category of “idle” to the category of “workers” and will work on an equal basis with others.

The city of Hermonassa apparently arose in the 6th century BC, in the 4th century it became part of the Greek Bosporan kingdom, existed for almost eight hundred years and collapsed under the onslaught of nomads, then, like the Phoenix, to be reborn from the ashes. True, already under different names.

People initially appreciated the favorable strategic position of the Taman Peninsula. Ancient Hermonassa was important both militarily and commercially. Unfortunately, it is possible to find out more reliably what the city actually looked like from ancient Greek sources rather than from archaeological data. The fact is that excavations, which, by the way, are not permitted everywhere, are greatly complicated due to the fact that the territory of Hermonassa is completely hidden under the buildings of modern Taman. In addition, above the ancient city there are multiple layers of earth from subsequent eras.

The brief but succinct enumeration made by A. Voronov and M. Mikhailova is impressive:

“The cultural layer of the settlement sometimes reaches 12 meters, including the strata of the Greek Hermonassa, Byzantine Tamatakha, Slavic Tmutarakan, Genoese Matrega, the Turkish fortress of Hunkala and Russian Taman, between which there are layers of settlements of the Huns, Khazars, Pechenegs and other inhabitants of the region that have not preserved the names.” .

In fact, such a “layer cake” is more likely not heaven, but hell for archaeologists. Because, before getting to the bottom of the ancient layers, it is necessary to go through, study, describe (do not throw away artifacts that are “not from that time”) all the finds lying in the upper layers, and this takes a lot of time. There is another problem: some archaeological work is carried out underwater. Entire quarters of the destroyed Hermonassa eventually went into the sea, and it continues to gradually take the city. Every autumn-winter season coastline more and more washed away by water.

Hermonassa - Tumentarkhan - Tmutarakan

But let's get back to history. In the 6th century AD, Hermonassa was conquered by the Turkic Khaganate, renaming the city Tumentarkhan. After a couple of centuries, the Turks were replaced by the Khazars. And in the 960s, thanks to the successful campaigns of the Kyiv prince Svyatoslav Igorevich, the city was annexed to the Old Russian state and named Tmutarakan. It is believed that its inhabitants were the first of the cities of Rus' to accept Christianity, since even before 988, in addition to numerous other nationalities, both Byzantine Greeks and Armenians lived here.

Tmutarakan is an ancient city, the center of the Russian appanage Tmutarakan principality, believed to have been founded in the 10th century, under Prince Igor.

- one of the sons of Vladimir. The same Mstislav who in 1022 fought with the Kosozh prince Rededey. Mstislav, as you know, “killed Rededya in front of the Kosozh regiments.”

Under what circumstances Rus' lost Tmutarakan is not known for certain. Mentions of the city disappear from Russian chronicles somewhere at the end of the 11th century, but appear in Byzantine ones. From the 13th century it was already a Genoese colony, in the 15th-18th centuries it was the Turkish fortress of Hunkala and the city of Taman, and only then the Russian village of Taman.

archaeological site, which has global significance and federal status, a number of valuable artifacts were found here, such as fragments of ancient temples, sarcophagi, a treasure of Bosporan gold coins of the 4th century BC.

Phanagorian Fortress is a memorial and tourist attraction of Taman.

Phanagorian fortress is located on the eastern outskirts of Taman. The attractions located on the eastern outskirts of Taman are associated with the return of Russia to these lands. It began at the end of the 18th century, when Catherine the Great signed a decree on the settlement of Taman by the Cossacks. A famous historical thing happened. Soon, regular troops under the command of the famous Generalissimo A.V. Suvorov came to reinforce the first colonists, and they laid the foundation east of the village Phanagorian fortress.

Phanagorian fortress unites three fortresses from different times. The first, small one, was erected in 1794 close to the ruined fortifications of the abandoned Turkish fortification of Juncala. It looked like a “temporary building”, which was replaced a little later by... another “temporary building”, rearranged a little to the east. A little time passed, and even further east the Suvorov fortress of Phanagoria, which has survived to this day, appeared.

Actually real antique city Phanagoria was located in the area of the current village of Sennaya, but in the 18th century this was not yet known, and Phanagoria was “renamed” to. In view of this misunderstanding, the Phanagorian Regiment, personally assembled by the brilliant Russian commander, received its name. By the way, it really sounds better than “Germonassky”.

The Phanagorian regiment took part in the assault on Izmail, received the St. George's banner for Bazardzhik, in the Patriotic War and for the subsequent Foreign Campaign, distinguished itself at Borodino, Ayutzen and Leipzig, brought two St. George's trumpets from near Plevna and took the last battles in the Second Patriotic War, later renamed to. However, during the October Revolution of 1917, the regiment, which had the august patronage and the letters “E.I.V.” in its name (“His Imperial Majesty”), did not survive and was disbanded.

Phanagorian fortress or, more precisely, its three earthen bastions have survived to this day. This is the most valuable monument of Russian fortification of the 1111th century, a complex structure designed by outstanding military engineers I. Knyazev and F. Devolan. During the construction, material from a dismantled Turkish fortress was actively used, for the construction of which the Turks, in turn, often used stone left over from the Tmutarakan and even Hermonas times.

During the construction of the Phanagoria fortress, Russian builders more than once found fragments of ancient marble columns and stone statues. It was here that the “Tmutarakan stone” was discovered. One can only guess how many ancient artifacts were embedded in the foundations of the bastions for strength. But now who will let us explore these bastions - they are also monuments.

Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov himself took part in the construction of the Phanagorian fortress. The fortifications served faithfully for about sixty years, protecting the right wing of the Kuban defensive line and covering the coast.

During the Crimean War of 1853-1856, the fortress was destroyed by interventionists and has not been restored since then. Now on the ramparts of the former bastions there is a memorial stone and bust monuments to A.V. Suvorov and F.F. Ushakov. The great admiral, like the great commander, is highly revered in Taman. After all, the famous battle near the Kerch Strait, during which Ushakov prevented superior Turkish forces from landing troops in the Crimea, took place, as they say, “in sight of Taman.”

In addition to the monument, in the village there is also a chapel of Fyodor Ushakov, built after he was canonized in 2001.

Lermontov in Taman

The great Russian writer Lermontov stayed in Taman for only three days, traveling from Stavropol to Gelendzhik, but this was enough for him to write a work that an admiring Belinsky called “the pearl of Russian prose” - the story “Taman”, included in the novel “A Hero of Our Time” .

This is how the village of Taman became famous throughout the world! True, it is very peculiar, if you remember the first lines of the story: “Taman is the worst little town of all the coastal cities of Russia.” But, really, neither the author nor his hero had anything to love Taman for. There, as we remember, they tried to drown Pechorin, and Lermontov ended up in the city in 1837, when he went into exile in the Caucasus for the poem “On the Death of a Poet.” One must think that under such circumstances it was unlikely that anything could delight him.

Lermontov House-Museum in Taman

And, nevertheless, Taman somehow charmed the writer’s soul, and grateful residents staged a house-museum of M.Yu. Lermontov. A simple hut with a thatched roof was restored with maximum authenticity on the former farmstead of the Black Sea Cossack Fyodor Mysnik. There is an ethnographic surroundings and a museum of Lermontov’s books.

What do you remember when you walk into Lermontov Museum in Taman? Well, of course:

“The full moon shone on the reed roof and white walls of my new home; in the courtyard, surrounded by a cobblestone fence, stood another shack, smaller and older than the first. The shore sloped down to the sea almost right next to its walls, and below, dark blue waves splashed with a continuous murmur.”

And Lermontov, by the way, visited Taman again. Also passing through his second, fatal exile to the Caucasus in 1840. But this time he stopped in and did not leave any literary masterpieces for this occasion.

Free spirit of the Cossacks - ethnocultural tourist complex “Cossack village Ataman”

And, of course, a whole series sights of Taman dedicated to the founders of the modern settlement - the Cossacks. So, very close to, in the old building there is the Museum of the Cossacks, which is also the headquarters of the Taman Cossack Society. A little away from the coast, in a park named after, even before the revolution, a monument to the first settlers, the Cossacks, was erected, on which Golovaty’s own poems were superseded.

Taman is also famous for its ethnocultural tourist complex « Cossack village Ataman", opened in 2009 on the western outskirts of the city. - this is twenty hectares of history with “full immersion”! IN Atamani there is a windmill, a tavern, a village school, huts of the ataman and his subordinates, as well as farmsteads of artisans: gunsmiths, potters, blacksmiths, weavers, chebotars (shoemakers), winemakers.

Exhibits for farmsteads Ataman village They were collected throughout Kuban, and every district of the Krasnodar Territory contributed to the construction. Since then, this has been the case, the districts take care of their “brainchildren”: the residents of Armavir are responsible for the weaver’s hut, the residents of Primorsko-Akhtar are responsible for the fishing settlement, the residents of Sochi are responsible for entertainment. Also, of course, in the national spirit, for example, enthusiasts are invited to climb onto a polished pole and get the coveted prize.

For children in the village there is a “fairy tale kingdom”, for adults there is a hippodrome, and there is also its own chapel. Steppe expanses, the sound of the surf from under the steep shore, the smell of bitter Kipchak herbs and sea salt - the unique atmosphere of the Azov region!

And, of course, in the village of Ataman you can try, without leaving the historical scenery, all the local Cossack delicacies: pickles, borscht, dumplings, vodka. So those who are not familiar with the life of rural residents of the Russian south and Little Russia will find a lot of interesting and educational things for themselves. And those who know you won’t get bored. So if you are going to Ataman, be prepared to spend at least a couple of hours there.

Monument to Cossack settlers. But out of a dozen recipients, only two responded to the request. Ataman of the Yekaterinodar department, Ivan Mazan, proposed depicting a Cossack on the monument with bread and salt and a letter of honor granted by Catherine II to the Cossacks. And the teacher of the Mariinsky Women's School, the artist Pyotr Kosolap, recommended sculpting “the figure of a typical Cossack in the clothes of that time, one leg of which should be in the boat, and the other on an irregularly shaped pedestal, as if thereby depicting the landing on the island of Phanagoria,” as Captain K. writes. P. Gadenko in the brochure “Kuban monument to the Zaporozhye Cossacks”, published in 1911.

And then the usual red tape for such matters began: negotiations were held for a long time about what to make a monument to Cossack settlers in Taman. Casting from metal turned out to be too expensive. And made from concrete - “pieces of brick and sand” - is too cheap and short-lived.

We decided to ask the artist B.V. Edwards for an estimate, who at that time was working on the monument to Catherine II in Yekaterinodar. And then suddenly someone came up with the idea of immortalizing Savva the Bely in stone, and for some reason Eduardo sent a sketch of the monument
