The word “chalet” originally meant a small rural house in the Alps, distinguished by its special architecture. "Chalet" was understood literally as "shepherd's hut." It is believed that chalet architecture originated in the southeast of France on the border with Switzerland and Italy (according to other sources, “chalets” appeared for the first time in Switzerland). However, the French themselves understand the chalet as a “Swiss house”.

The “chalet” design, as well as its interior space, has become very popular. Houses in the mountains became larger, but the main design features of the chalet were preserved. The traditional features of the chalet interior have remained virtually unchanged.

One of the main reasons for the growing popularity of chalet architecture in last years is, apparently, a massive passion among people for skiing and recreation ski resorts. "Chalet" has become associated with travel and prestigious tourism.

“Chalets” are being built in Canada, the USA, Germany, and Russia. Moreover, “chalets” are built even where there are no mountains nearby. For example, in the Moscow region there are entire villages of Alpine-style houses.

The house was built from local natural materials: stone and wood (coniferous timber - pine or larch); lime was used as a whitewash for plastered walls.

The high ground floor was always built of stone. This was explained by the need to reliably protect the house from cold, moisture, snow and, most importantly, to build foundations and basement walls on any mountain slope. All subsequent floors, as a rule, the first and attic, were assembled from massive coniferous timber (pine, larch). Over time, the tree, under the influence of the external environment: wind, snow, rain, sun, cold, naturally became completely dark and tarred.

Facades facing the weather could be covered with additional wood: wood chips or shingles, and looked sad due to the monotony of the natural dark color of the wood and the lack of additional decorations.

The most beautiful side of the house was the eastern facade. The roof gable with the ridge was always oriented towards the sunrise. The most beautiful façade looked out over the valley. The walls facing the sunny side were plastered, painted with white lime, decorated with bright paintings, decorated with ledges, balconies, and carvings. Decorative decorations, as a rule, were devoid of any pretentiousness. The motives for the painting had religious themes.

The architectural geometry is simple: it was built by hand. The roofs are sloping and strongly overhanging the vertical walls. This roof design is not accidental: it protected the foundation, walls of the house and the surrounding area from wetness and snow. In winter, the snow stayed on the roof, covering it evenly. A snow coat was created to prevent heat from escaping from the house. The roofs were covered with shingles or shingles (thin wooden plates). The roof was covered with stones to prevent it from being blown away in bad weather, which is not so uncommon in the mountains.

The last floor is necessarily an attic, with a sloping ceiling.

Terraces extending far beyond the perimeter of the house and seeming to hover over the valley are not a rare occurrence. Forming a horizontal line relative to the mountain slope, they made it possible to increase the usable building area.

Balconies under low-hanging roofs could be very simple in decoration, deliberately rough, or, on the contrary, decorated with provocative carvings.

The chalet has many windows, and their size is rather large, which, in general, is typical for French architecture.

The central dominant place in the main hall or living room belongs to the fireplace.

Only natural materials are used in finishing. Roughly plastered and whitewashed walls are decorated with wooden panels or simply boards. The wood, mainly pine and larch, is specially prepared to give it an old and rough-hewn appearance, then tinted and coated with wax. Stone of local mountain origin is used in the design of fireplaces, floors and walls of the basement. The floors and walls of the first and attic floors are usually wooden. No bright high lighting, no second light. Everything is cozy, closer to the floor, to the fire. The colors are thick, rich, but not bright, slightly muted. Primary colors, the colors of the Earth, go well with wood, stone, forging, the color of natural unbleached linen and wool.

The furniture in a typical chalet is simple, rustic, with unpolished surfaces.

Today, the geography of chalets has expanded to the most daring scale. “Chalets” can be found on any continent and in almost any country. This style has become loved by many powerful of the world this. A large wooden chalet-style palace, intended for the honored guests of Sultan Abdulhamid, is located in Turkey. Chalets have become widespread at ski resorts in the USA, on the mountainous coasts of Italy and Spain. But the most “correct” “chalets”, original trendsetters, are located in the heart of Europe - in France, Switzerland and Austria. Most famous resorts in these countries: Courchevel, Meribel, Val Thorens, Val d'Isere, Tignes, Chamonix (France); St. Moritz, Zermatt, Davos, Crans-Montana, Saas-Fee, (Switzerland); Lech, Mayerhofen, Sölden, Kitzbühel (Austria).
