Coming to any country on vacation, and especially for a long stay, the first thing a traveler needs is to find a suitable shelter. There is a lot of accommodation in Phu Quoc for every taste and budget: from 5 Vietnamese star hotels to cheap hostels – Even more housing is built every year. Gradually, the island is preparing to receive tourists: where there used to be vacant lots, houses, hotels and bungalows are appearing. Giant hotels are rising in place of old ruins. In some places, entire neighborhoods are being built (for example, Sunset Sanato, where it is located. Therefore, in the coming years, difficulties in finding suitable housing should not arise. In any case, whoever is looking will find.

In Fukuoka, most landowners suddenly resorted to construction. Just this winter, several complexes have grown on our dead-end street, and one of the most large hotels"in the area". The airport on the island is also expanding - more precisely, work is underway with runways, as I understand it, for reception large airliners, and, consequently, an increase in passenger traffic. Currently, the airport building is capable of receiving and passing through tens of times more tourists than what arrives this season - now the airport is actually empty. The situation is approximately the same with hotels and housing on Phu Quoc Island. There are far more places of residence built than there are tourists ready to move into them, so why There’s definitely no need to worry – these are packed hotels in Fukuoka . On the contrary, on the island, 80% of housing, with the exception of the cheapest, is empty even during the peak season.

Finding a suitable hotel room, apartment or bungalow in Fukuoka is quite easy even on the spot. Unlike more populated places like Goa or Thailand, you don't even need to book a hotel in advance. It’s enough just to take a taxi to any cluster of hotels and walk around the area a little, finding out the price. Although, if you come with children and/or large suitcases, then this option will not be very convenient. In this case, it is much easier to rent accommodation in an inexpensive hotel for 1-2 days, and then find something that you really like. However, you should decide in advance what exactly you expect from accommodation on Phu Quoc Island; perhaps a hotel booked through popular services will be enough for you online booking, which we'll talk a little lower.

In general, the following scheme is perfect for finding suitable housing in Fukuoka and almost any other place:

  • Booking a hotel for a couple of days, where suitcases, backpacks and children are dropped off
  • Rent a bike for a couple of days – you can do it on foot, but on wheels it’s much more convenient
  • Looking for long-term housing - just move around the area and choose the best option

I wrote about this in detail in the article: “” - most experienced travelers to Asia do exactly this

Cheap hotels and bungalows in Phu Quoc from Hotel Look

Surely everyone has heard of booking services such as Agoda and Booking, but how often have you compared the results on both sites? Both resources may be helpful. when looking for a hotel on Phu Quoc island for the first time or for the entire vacation. It is extremely rare to find the same offers on them; as a rule, the hotel selection differs in prices and content. Therefore, recently, instead of monitoring several booking sites at once, I began to use services such as Hotellook, who compare all the offers for me. In particular, I used this site to find a cheap hotel in Ho Chi Minh City , located near the airport. As a result, the search gave us a good option, where we stayed on the first day of our stay in Vietnam (who is interested in the hotel, here it is: Francophone Son Phuong Hotel).

You can read more about our trip to Phu Quoc via Ho Chi Minh City, as well as ways to get directly to the island in the following articles:

For me, as the owner of a travel website, hotellook offers an affiliate program, thanks to which I can earn an extra couple of hundred rubles needed to pay for the site, and readers, by ordering or choosing a hotel through my link, can thank me without losing anything. In addition, when ordering accommodation through my partner for myself, I receive a small cashback (about 1% of the order value - a small thing, but pleasant). I repeat, for tourists, using the hotellook website does not incur any additional costs, only an easier way to choose the right hotel. For example, when looking for accommodation in Fukuoka, you can use a hotel card, thanks to which you can not only estimate the price of accommodation, but also choose a suitable location (say, closer to the sea, airport or city center).

As practice shows, highest housing prices in Fukuoka can be found during the holidays, from mid-December to mid-January, and a slight increase in price may be in Chinese New Year, the dates of which are constantly changing. The most budget-friendly, but also stupid holiday in Fukuoka is in the low season from May to October, when daily rains and heat make you regret your chosen dates.

To understand what prices should be considered good, I will briefly describe the main types of housing in Fukuoka and their average cost. If you come across more expensive housing, then you are faced with business in the Vietnamese way, when the price is inflated due to the demand for the product (I wrote about this in the article: “” - where I explain why it is worth changing traders from time to time). Run away from these Vietnamese, because there are several times more housing in Fukuoka than vacationers . But let's get back to prices:

If the hotel owners are not ready to meet and make discounts, then it makes sense to look at another hotel. In addition, in most hotels the rental price includes breakfast, water, laundry and even transfer from the airport, however, a taxi to the hotel will cost you 400-500 rubles, so it’s not such a generous gift. Of course, the most profitable accommodation is in the private sector of Fukuoka - housing is constantly being built, so the owners are very accommodating and do not inflate prices.

Private sector on Phu Quoc island

I wrote literally a few words about our house in the article: “” - where I summed up the first month on the island. Briefly, we rented a one-room apartment with a living room and a kitchen in a newly built private hotel Huong Son (approximate location: https://goo.gl/maps/pMneke7bDUL2). Here are a few shots of our shelter and a point on the map if you want to live here. The owners are an elderly Vietnamese couple who are almost able to run a normal business (the main thing is to remind them in time about all the promises: change of linen, cost of living 6,500,000 local dong, about $290 for two beds per month and transfer to the airport). There are several similar places nearby, so you can always walk around and ask prices in other hotels just for fun.

After driving around Fukuoka a little, we came to the conclusion that an apartment or bungalow for two should cost about 250 - 350 dollars per month at a distance from the sea of no more than 10 minutes on foot. We also found more affordable options, but the conditions there were a little worse (smaller area, worse sound insulation). Vietnamese-style houses are inexpensive - a kind of 20 square meter studio with simple plastic or rattan furniture. Comfortable houses with everything you need, including a washing machine, dishes, and an on-site swimming pool usually cost from $400 per month. There are houses that are not at all Vietnamese style, but the price of living in them will also not be Vietnamese, from $700 per month.

All the above prices include electricity, water and internet, if they try to add all this to your bill, most likely you have negotiated the price poorly. Finally, I would like to say a few words about the approach to pricing when several people are staying in a room. I’m not sure about the whole of Vietnam; in Ho Chi Minh City we haven’t encountered such a problem, but when renting housing in Phu Quoc, you have to take into account that the owners want to get money from each tenant. For example, our hotel costs 6,000,000 for two, but the price for three is already 6,500,000 dong per month, when a friend came to visit us, they wanted to charge us 7,000,000, despite the fact that the number of beds (2 pieces) did not change - just natural greed . We have also seen more than once an increase in the cost of housing, even when friends moved in temporarily, according to the old Russian tradition of “on the floor on a mattress.” So, when coming with your family or friends, be prepared for the fact that they may ask for an additional payment for each “extra” person.

This is probably all that we were able to collect about housing in Fukuoka; for the first time, you can always use the search form, and then find suitable housing on your own. It may be quite difficult to communicate with the Vietnamese, but everyone understands the numbers perfectly, so have a happy holiday.

Be sure to tell your friends about us

Evgeniy, thank you! We found your hotel, but there were no rooms available, so we checked in nearby, quite decently and inexpensively.
Can I ask another question? You write that there are free sun loungers on the beach near your guest house (and therefore ours). As far as I looked, all the sun loungers belong to hotels or bars. We tried to lie down and were asked politely. Where did you find free sunbeds? Thank you in advance!

  1. On east coast Fukuoka has a fishing village called Lang Chai Ham Ninh, there is also a river there.
There are several cheap guest houses in its vicinity.
Basically all the housing is on the other, west coast.
What can you say about the east coast?

    1. as an option for an inexpensive holiday it is quite suitable. Far from entertainment, but if you are just interested in relaxation, then fine. Last year we were also offered this area, but one of our goals was to visit the Episode festival - so we still decided to settle in the west. On the other hand, living in the east you will be closer to Bai Sao - snow-white beach, and in the fishing village you will find very cheap seafood and excursions

It’s easy to rent inexpensive housing for a month or two in Vietnam: you go around the neighborhoods you like, ask the owners about the conditions, bargain, and move in. But this path is not suitable for those who want to prepare nest in advance.

This article is for those who want to rent accommodation before their trip, have options to look through, know the prices to form a travel budget and understand what to expect on the spot.

Before the trip

A few weeks before arriving in Vietnam, while still in Russia, I studied Vietnamese rental sites. And I got an idea of the quality of rental housing, approximate prices and rental conditions. I found some sites on my own, others were later recommended by Vietnamese friends. Even with a machine translation from Google translate, you can imagine what apartments and houses are for rent, and what conditions the landlords set.

Real estate rental/sale sites

Free classifieds sites

In Vietnam, you can rent a house online, but you need to do this in advance, so after arriving in Nha Trang, I started searching for housing on the Internet thoroughly. I especially want to mention the service www.chotot.com, which has a user-friendly phone app with an intuitive interface.

After sifting out proposals based on price and type of proposal (we only needed rent), three options were selected. In their contacts, landlords indicate phone numbers, but since I don’t speak Vietnamese, and landlords most likely don’t speak English, I didn’t call. In such cases, it is better to write using the same Google translate, having selected a few more advertisements on other sites, I began to look for possible ways of communication.

I tried to find the owners of advertisements using their Whatsapp numbers. Our Vietnamese friend Hoa used Whatsapp, and I decided that this messenger was popular in Vietnam. Not popular, most numbers on Whatsapp are not registered. I wrote to Thi, another Vietnamese friend from Saigon, and asked me to call and find out the contacts of the owners for correspondence, she helped me, and I received the Facebook pages of the owners of the apartments - my first contacts. But unfortunately, it turned out that good options were handed over. Later, however, one of those landlords gave me the contacts of a friend who is renting out a house.

And then it became clear why the Vietnamese were not on Whatsapp; it turned out that they had their own messenger, made in Vietnam by the Vietnamese. Messenger Zalo this is a full-fledged one social network. After installing the application, all Vietnamese people recorded in the phone book or added on Facebook appeared in Zalo contacts. The application has channels, similar to Facebook groups, where you can find information about places, renting and buying, and meetings. There is a wall with photographs, news, etc. Even a “nearby” function for quick dating. One of the contacts even posted my ad on a real estate rental website, and two days later, when we had already rented a house, offers began to come in for the ad, but it was too late.

Websites can be translated from Vietnamese online. Application www.chotot.com Not translated into English, but intuitively understandable. In the place filter, select the province of Kiên Giang, Phu Quoc island. It is not possible to choose Phu Quoc everywhere; if it doesn’t work out, under the advertisements it will be indicated that this advertisement is not from the mainland, but from the island.

Before arrival we booked a guest house for booking.com, and there were two days left before leaving the guesthouse, suitable options from the network were rented out, so we went to look for housing the old way: by driving around the places we liked, looking into the courtyards with bungalows and empty houses.

If you don’t want to learn Vietnamese and surf local websites, you can always use booking.com, there are also many rental advertisements on long term, but the prices are slightly higher than those of local owners without an account in international booking services.

Local search

We traveled around the area for several days on a bike that we rented in the guest house until we found a suitable option. Read how to rent a bike on the island. How do you know if a house is for rent? Expand your vocabulary in the local language. We were looking for inscriptions thuê. My Vietnamese dictionary has been replenished with phrases on the topic “rent”, because without such a dictionary it will be difficult to explain anything to the locals. Please be patient and have a Vietnamese dictionary on your phone or notepad.

  • Ở đây có nhà cho thuê không ạ? - Do you rent out the house?
  • Bao nhiêu một tháng? - How much is the rent per month?
  • Tiền thuê nhà đã bao gồm điện nước chưa ạ? - Does the rent include electricity and water?

We liked several options, but each of them was missing something. So, on the way out of town, we saw an advertisement for a bungalow for rent, stopped by, saw a beautiful two-story mansion and a courtyard with flowers, several more one-story houses around, but it turned out that there was no kitchen in the bungalow, but you could cook in the owner’s room. Electricity, water, laundry, everything is included in the rental price - 6,000,000 VND.

The hostess spoke a little English and the house was not far from the beach and next to the road, but... But as usual, it took a long time to find out whether it was rented out or not, we got to know the whole family and the staff, spent about forty minutes explaining what we needed, and after assessing the prospects, refused to cook on the common kitchen. For a long stay, the kitchen should be in the house; it is convenient and does not cause discomfort.

The story of mutual understanding repeated itself with the next house. It is very difficult to find someone who can clearly say which house is for rent and for what amount. First you look for the owner, then a whole crowd of nearby residents, relatives, guests, random passers-by, dogs, children, and yard birds gathers. They all begin to decide among themselves whether housing is rented or not, and for how much, and for what period, and what conditions. Just wait. If you have been forgotten, remind yourself.

There are potentially two large areas in Fukuoka where you should look for rental options - the Ong Lang and Long Beach beach districts. Both areas are close to the city, and are full of tourism infrastructure: shops with European food, restaurants, laundries and so on. But the Long Beach area was rejected due to greater noise and tourist attraction. Therefore, the choice fell on Ong Lang. The order of prices in the Ong Lang area is as follows: resorts 300 meters from the beach offer bungalows with a kitchen, bar, restaurant and swimming pool on site for 8-9 million VND ($350-400) per month, daily 250,000 - 300,000 VND (15 -20 dollars). It's crowded and fun, usually there is no kitchen, but it's like looking for it, the atmosphere of the place is pleasant. On Long Beach, prices start from 10,000,000 depending on conditions.

As a result, having traveled around the area, we didn’t find anything decent, there were several options, but the worm of doubt was nagging at our resolve, and we turned to the most effective way to find housing in Fukuoka - ask those who are already on vacation.

In any tourist place South-East Asia, where residents of cold countries come for the winter, there is a local community of expats or long-stayers. There are several large groups on Facebook, foreigners and Russians, where people help each other with advice:
