Top 15 ski resorts in Finland

Most tourists winter holidays in Finland it is associated with the image of Santa Claus on a reindeer sleigh, the aurora borealis and dense snow-covered forests. Surprisingly, the absence high mountains did not hinder the development of ski tourism. The Finns took a fancy to the hills, paved snow slopes, built modern infrastructure, and now the ski resorts of Finland successfully compete with the European Alps.

Why choose Finland

The map shows that a third of the country lies beyond the Arctic Circle. But the northern climate with frosts and heavy snow does not frighten guests who prefer leisure. On the contrary, the long winter is a huge plus that the Finns use to attract tourists.

Alpine skiing is considered a national sport in Finland. In the small northern country, 75 modern ski centers have been built. Reviews from tourists are full of positive things. The slopes are mostly flat, wide, comfortable for beginners and intermediate skiers. There are also ski slopes for experienced athletes, where international competitions take place.

Peak season falls on the period from March to May, when frosts weaken and comfortable weather sets in.

Tourists leave excellent reviews, and their choice is quite understandable:

  1. You don’t need to fly far; from Moscow to Helsinki it’s a 2-hour flight.
  2. Compared to popular resorts in Europe, they will cost relatively little.
  3. Ski slopes and service are of very high quality.
  4. You can combine skiing with a trip to Santa Claus for the New Year. Your children will be happy.

The local exoticism also attracts us - the polar night and the fantastic northern lights!

We present an overview of popular resorts.

Finland is a country of vast forests, hills and blue lakes. Locals managed to make their homeland attractive to tourists, softening the northern climate with fabulous comfort and advanced technologies.

Every day in Russia, a healthy lifestyle is gaining more and more popularity. In connection with this phenomenon, more and more sports clubs, swimming pools and fitness rooms are opening in our country, but mostly these establishments are located indoors. But what about those who are used to playing winter sports outdoors? And what to do if you want to get on your skis as soon as possible, but outside the window there is autumn grayness without a hint of white cover? In Finland, this problem was solved a long time ago by creating a refrigerated ski slope in Kontiolahti in North Karelia. Today I would like to tell you in more detail about this unique ski slope in Finland. Moreover, this year it started working on October 12.

Ski resorts in Finland. Photo: facebook

Kontiolahti Stadium tracks

The refrigerated ski run is 2.2 kilometers long. Snow for it is prepared in the previous season and stored during the spring-summer period in a special room. In addition to the main refrigerated ski slope, there are additional ones, which include, in particular, a climb called “The Wall”. The total length of additional trails is 3-4 kilometers. Also at the Biathlon Stadium in Kontiolahti there are several competition and training tracks, the length of which reaches 20 kilometers. During high season, the refrigerated ski slope is open daily: Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 14.00 and from 15.00 to 20.00. On Friday and Sunday the track is open from 8.30 to 14.00 and from 15.00 to 19.00, and on Saturday the opening hours are reduced by one hour - to 18.00.

As for the prices, they are very affordable. Thus, a ticket for the entire season for biathletes is 310 euros, for skiers – 290 euros. There are also day and two-hour tickets for 20 euros and 17 euros respectively. However, biathletes wishing to shoot must pay an additional 4 euros in addition to the main ticket for use of the shooting range. Here you can rent skis (10 euros), ski poles (6 euros) and boots (8 euros) or the whole set for 20 euros.

How to get to Kontiolahti

The Kontiolahti Biathlon Stadium is quite well located - there is no need to go far into the interior of the country. The distance to St. Petersburg is only about 400 kilometers, to the Svetogorsk international checkpoint - 220 kilometers, and to the Vyartsilya international checkpoint - 89 kilometers. To get to the cooled ski slope from Svetogorsk, you must always move along highway 6 to the north of the country and after about 200 kilometers turn onto road No. 5051. If you go from the Vyartsilya motorway checkpoint, you need to take highway 9, then along highway 6 and from there turn onto road No. 5051. The most convenient way to get to Kontiolahti is with your own car. However, you can also get here by plane, arriving at Joensuu airport, which is 25 kilometers from the biathlon center. Flights to Joensuu from Helsinki are operated by the Finnish air carrier Finnair 4-6 times a day. Trains also run from the Finnish capital to Joensuu. Travel time will be only 4.5 hours. So, no matter what mode of transport you choose, getting to the refrigerated ski slopes will not be difficult.

Services and entertainment in Kontiolahti

In addition to the training tracks, guests of the Kontiolahti Biathlon Center have a gym with the opportunity to shoot with an optical rifle, a cafeteria where you can have a snack and a cup of aromatic coffee at any time, a meeting room for 80 people for meetings and team building, educational services, for example, Biathlon training and ski lessons, which can be organized individually or for groups. There are also opportunities for sports not only in winter, but also in summer - a roller skating track, Nordic walking and cross-country routes and bicycles are at guests' disposal. In Kontiolahti you can book a corporate event, for example a biathlon competition. In autumn winter period- on a snowy track, and in spring and summer - on a four-kilometer roller ski track. It is worth noting that competitions in Kontiolahti are not uncommon, including at an international level; for example, the Biathlon World Cup has already been held here ten times.

As for accommodation, the closest motel from the refrigerated ski slope is Kontio, which is only 4 kilometers away. A little further, in Joensuu, there are several hotels that will happily accommodate ski guests.

There is an opinion that every little Finn learns to take his first steps and ski at the same time. You are immediately convinced of this when you travel around Finland in winter. The ease and skill with which the indigenous people overcome the ski tracks sometimes causes real admiration. Skiing in Finland has become an integral part of the culture, way of life and life of this people. Please note that winters here are quite harsh and snowy. Therefore, in past centuries, when the most advanced form of transport was considered a harness, skis were also the main means of transportation.

Moreover, people loved them so much that many today still prefer to ride them not only on weekends, but also on weekdays. The development of sports in this country plays a very important role. It must be said that various ski slopes are being built throughout the country and significant funds are allocated from municipal budgets for this. IN big cities The routes are laid in a park area so that they can be easily reached by public transport. And then the routes go far beyond the city. Skiing in Finland is a common activity for many locals.

Since Finns are accustomed to doing any work well, the routes laid in small towns and villages are often not at all different in quality from those in the capital. Especially if it concerns your favorite activity. The most extensive and overall longest route is around the Ylläs ski resort, where most of the routes are illuminated. Therefore, it is possible to ride there even late in the evening. Admiring Finnish winter landscapes is equivalent to the best meditation. This type of walking is accessible to everyone: you just get on your skis and go slowly. But like any other sport, you will need certain equipment.

Photo: Matkailuneuvonta / Wikimedia Commons

You can rent it at any rental office. , which are in every city, also have an excellent selection of winter equipment. Most of the assortment is Finnish-made goods. Family skiing in Finland on a weekend is not uncommon. Finns also love to go skiing to lakes. If you wish, you can go fishing there. And what is a picnic in nature worth! Or you can just have some hot tea and a sandwich to warm up - what more could you want? And a fire awaits tourists at a halt in a national hut called “kota”. Many of them are located near established ski routes. The Finns are proud that their country is called the winteriest and snowiest. And they support this image in every possible way. Very often you can meet representatives of all generations on the tracks. Often very elderly people, and what can we say about kids, because winter is a real pleasure for them.

Sometimes it seems that even the Finnish Santa Claus, having completed the job of making wishes come true and sending gifts to children, gets on skis and rushes across the plains and mountains, enjoying the fabulous nature around. Skiing in Finland is not only a national pleasure, but also a profitable area of the tourism business. At the winter resorts, of which there are about 80 in this country, all conditions have been created for the most complete recreation. The closer you go to the north, the longer the holiday season. In some areas it reaches a record value of almost 8 months.

Among other things, you can also enjoy in Lapland. Above the Arctic Circle there is almost no sun in winter. However, the light that the earth receives is enough to ride around to your heart's content. In addition, artificial lighting, which almost all trails in this region are equipped with, allows you to descend even in the evening. The peak influx of tourists is observed closer to spring. At this time, skiing in Finland is more comfortable for a person accustomed to mid-latitudes: it is no longer so cold, and there is still plenty of snow. If there is a water park nearby, then skiing can be combined with water activities.

  • Myllymäki ski resort. There is a cross-country ski track, including an illuminated one, 5 km in size. You can be taught how to ski and how to properly care for your skis. Available for rental necessary equipment. You can visit a cafe, restaurant and sauna. There is a place for making a fire.
  • Ruokolahden FreeSki in Ruokolahti. Lomatie street 2. FreeSki ski resort.
  • Ski track in the city of Lappeenranta. Lighting from 06.00 to 23.00.
  • Illuminated track in Huhtiniemi. 3.5 kilometers long.
  • Illuminated route in Kisapuisto Park. Length 4.5 kilometers.
  • Ski track at Lappeenranta Airport at the end of the runway. Lavolankatu st.

But nothing beats a walk followed by a heated Finnish sauna. This is another pleasure for which it is worth traveling to this country. Above, you can see the addresses of some routes in the region bordering Russia. In our next article, we would like to tell you where you will find out the addresses of special farms, where they are bred and where you can go not only on an excursion, but also where you can ride these wonderful animals.

Scandinavia destroys the idea that ski resorts in Europe are exclusively Alps. Of course, the height and steepness of some alpine slopes cannot be compared with the Scandinavian ones, but in terms of the level of service, organization of recreation and infrastructure development - it’s easy.

Here I propose to discuss the five best ski resorts in Finland, the snowy homeland of Santa Claus.

Finland cannot boast of high snowy peaks; the mountainous terrain is more like a series of high hills completely covered with snow, but the altitude above sea level is still quite high - from 400 m.

Most of the resorts are located above the Arctic Circle, which requires a responsible approach to snow equipment and supplies of anti-frostbite products. Clothes must be chosen appropriately, in Finland ski season There is no alpine temperature “near zero”, at least -15 Celsius, and it will still be warm. There are frosts on the hills and up to –40 C. Therefore, very frost-resistant shoes are absolutely necessary both for sports and for simple walks in the fresh air.

In general, when planning to visit the Arctic, it is worth studying in advance the requirements for safe behavior in frosty weather.

Now we can move on from the caveats to the presentation. So, get acquainted! Finnish ski resorts in all their glory.

Luosto

Luosto is the first Lapland resort on our list.

Mount Luosto is located in the center of Lapland, approximately 130 km from Ravaniemi, the height of the mountain is small, and the maximum height difference on the slopes is 230 meters. The length of the longest route will be 1.5 km. In total, Luosto has seven slopes, two tracks for snowboarders, and simply heavenly conditions for cross-country skiers: 95 km of piste starting at the hotel's doorstep. You can continue practicing at night, as 2 slopes for alpine skiers and 28 km of cross-country ski trails are equipped with lighting towers. There is a children's slide for young athletes and - as is quite common in Finnish resorts - a variety of other winter activities for the whole family. In Luosto you can ride reindeer and dog sleds, have a motor sleigh safari, and taste Lapland cuisine.

The first line in all sentences additional rest A visit to Santa Claus Village is a must. Luosto is the closest of all other resorts to this attraction - a small excursion village in the Arctic Circle, where many entertainment attractions and programs are organized for children and parents.

A special feature of the Luosto ski resort is its close location to the amethyst mines. An excursion to the mine includes climbing to the top of the mountain, from which a wonderful view of the expanses of Lapland opens, then tourists are invited to go down into the mine and get an amethyst stone for themselves as a souvenir. This excursion is fully in keeping with the local atmosphere and makes you feel like a snow elf guarding the treasures of the mountains. At the foot of Luosto, the Amethyst SPA center is built, where vacationers will be greeted by a tropical climate with views of winter landscapes.

Luosto is a resort for a quiet family holiday, far from the hustle and bustle of big cities, but at the same time including all modern amenities for a comfortable life. Luosto is unlikely to be of interest to extreme sports fans and partygoers.

Puha

Pyha is Luosto's neighbor in Lapland, located in the Pyhatunturi National Park above the Arctic Circle. Unlike Luosto, extreme sports enthusiasts should come here. The trails on Püh are longer and steeper. The elevation difference is about 290 meters, the longest descent is 1.8 km. There are 14 trails, 5 illuminated ones. There is a separate snowboard park, as well as several options for free slopes for freeriders.

Pyha is famous for its ski school, so for beginner skiers the experience of communicating with instructors will be very useful. There is also a children's club where experienced mentors work with children, so parents can leave their child for training and ride "adults" the slopes ourselves.

The season on Pykh begins in November and ends in April-May (depending on the weather). The proximity to Luosto allows the two resorts to share passes to the slopes, as well as take vacationers on the same excursions. Same SPA center "Amethyst" is also available for vacationers on Pykh.

Recreation complex "except skis" approximately the same as in Luosto: excursions to visit Santa, dog and reindeer sledding, motorized safari, snow karting, winter fishing.

The level of Finnish service on Pyhe, as always, is at its best. There is evening and night recreation for young people here, so you don’t have to sit around in your rooms.

Vuokatti

The Vuokatti ski resort is located in the province of Kainu, but this does not change its proximity to the residence of Santa Claus (you are in Finland!). Vuokatti does not have record numbers of slopes and heights, but there is a unique tunnel with a 2.4 km long ski track for skiing in the summer - "Huurre Ski", as well as a very large selection of entertainment besides skiing.

Finland in all its diversity appears before the guests of the Vuokatti resort during trips to the sled dog kennel, visits to the ancient inn with local cuisine and traditions. Here you can pet reindeer, get acquainted with the living conditions of huskies, ride a sled, catch real trout from under the ice, go deeper into the snowy wasteland on snowshoes under the guidance of an instructor, and plow through the snowy expanses on a motor sleigh. Sleigh and snowmobile racing, horseback riding on furry-legged northern horses... You and your children will get such a unique experience only in the harsh Scandinavian country. There is no point in mentioning the Santa Claus camp again; the Finns themselves will remind you of it.

Ylläs

Ylläs is one of the two largest ski centers for professionals. It is Ylläs and Levi that skiers mention first when we're talking about about the present extreme sports. The elevation difference on Ylläs is 463 meters; these slopes have as many as 43 slopes, of which 4 "black". The flat ski track on Ylläs stretches for 280 km. The Alpine Ski World Cup trails are also located here. Super G. There are four tracks for snowboarders: a halfpipe, a superpipe and two straights.

Despite developed infrastructure, which brings the Finnish resort closer to similar Alpine resorts, Ylläs does not lose its polar charm. There is a really large selection of different cafes, places to rest between climbs, places to rest, etc. But all this goes well with the Finnish flavor.

Firstly, accommodation near Ylläs is offered in secluded cottages with all amenities (a sauna is a must!), located in a coniferous forest in the lap of almost untouched polar nature. Ylläse is located in western Lapland above the Arctic Circle, almost on the border with Sweden.

Secondly, there are unique Scandinavian attractions here: a distillery, a sheep farm, folk fairs, Lake Lapland Hell, where ancient tribes performed sacrifice rites. In Ylläs, modernity and its comfort are perfectly combined with the antiquity and closeness to nature of Lapland culture.

Levi

Levi is the largest and steepest ski center in Finland. It is located next to Ylläse, they even intersect with highways. Levi, like no other resort, corresponds to the idea of what a comfortable and large ski center should be. There are many trails for every taste and skill, including five “black” slopes.

The long history of the center’s development is connected with the origins of professional alpine skiing in Finland. It was in Levi that the first ski slope was built in the 60s of the last century; in 1999, the first gondola in Finland began operating here. cable car, which still remains a local landmark. Levi in 2000 was chosen as a reserve site for the Alpine Ski World Cup, as the resort demonstrated the highest level of competition organization.

During peak season, Levi Ski Center can accommodate 20,000 people. An airport was built specifically to transport people to the resorts of western Lapland in the town of Kittila, which now ranks second in Finland after the capital Helsinki.

There is no point in talking about Levi's infrastructure in detail: everything you can think of for an excellent organization is here ski holiday children and adults. Levi has been recognized as the best resort in Finland four times in its history. In 2010, the country's largest water park was opened on the territory of the center, which has 17 swimming pools. Artificial snow allows the ski season to be extended until June, and in the summer there is a large golf center in Levi.

The Lapland village at the foot of the mountains provides vacationers not only with comfortable accommodation in cottages and hotels, but also with all kinds of entertainment. There is night club, Entertainment Center, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes and even the Ice Village a few kilometers from Levi, where you can hold a wedding ceremony. At the same time, Lapland remains Lapland, even in a noisy resort, captivating the eyes with the harsh beauty of the northern landscapes.
