Let's now talk about rail transport throughout Portugal. ABOUT railway communication in Lisbon itself and its suburbs you can read in.

Rail transport in Portugal

So, in Portugal there is a fairly extensive network of railways. The main railway carrier is CP (called SePe) - Comboios de Portugal, which literally means Trains of Portugal. In Russia I always prefer to move around railway, because over long distances the train will always be out of competition with the bus. But here the situation is different: by our standards, it is a small country, and here trains and buses are approximately equal. On some routes, the bus is faster and more convenient than the train. In general, you need to look specifically at where and where you are coming from and then decide what is more convenient.

To make it clearer, let's look at a few of probably the most popular routes: Lisbon-Porto, Lisbon-Faro and Porto-Faro. Let's look at prices and travel times.

How to get there from Lisbon V Porto?

- Oriente station (Oriente) in Porto - Campanha station (Campania)

Travel options

Option 1:

intercity train Intercidades(Intercidadesh)

As we can see, the difference in travel time is not that big, and the difference in price is insignificant. Therefore, it seems to me that it doesn’t make much difference which train you take.

If you need to create your own route, use the CP website. There you will find schedules, prices and other necessary details. Follow the “detail” link next to the selected departure time, it will contain the details of the route, its schedule and prices.

Attention! Depending on the route you choose, you may need to make transfers, so be careful. This is always indicated in the “detail” paragraph.

Discounts and combination tickets

CP offers various discounts when purchasing tickets:

25% discount, which exists on this moment for those who purchase a ticket in advance and online, as well..

Here you will find different profitable combination tickets for different occasions: family tickets, ticket + parking, ticket + museum, etc. There are so many options that it makes no sense to translate it all. Let everyone choose what suits them.

Interesting! For lovers of trains and everything connected with them: CP has opened several museums in the cities of Entroncamento, Bragança, Chaves, Estremoz, Lagos, Valença, Santarém, etc.

Diesel narrow gauge train, Tras-os-Montes

By the way, while traveling along the Douro River valley in the province of Traz-os-Montes, we only used by rail. Was really interesting trip, we even rode a diesel train on a single-track line from the city of Régua to the city of Vila Real. The train wasn’t even really a train, just one single carriage with a driver. The landscape was unusual and very beautiful. This line follows one side of the winding valley of the Corgo River, which flows into the Douro. Now this line is closed, as I understand from the latest diagram, the railway has been replaced by a bus. But I think they open it during the summer tourist season. I highly recommend traveling in those parts - an unforgettable experience.

During the same trip, we stopped at Tua station. Judging by the map, this was supposed to be a railway junction and we expected to see a town there, take a walk there and return.

Due to the fact that Lisbon airport is very close to the Portuguese capital, transport connection Along the route, the airport and the city are at a height. Next, we will tell you how to get from Lisbon airport to the center and how much it costs.

We wrote about which area of Lisbon is best for a tourist to stay in. In Lisbon it is very convenient to travel by metro - current prices and the metro map can be found here.

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is located just 7 kilometers from the city limits, so you can reach the city in 15-30 minutes. The cost of the trip is from 1.9 euros per ticket - depending on the type of transport, the amount of luggage and the time of day.

If you prefer private transfer, when a driver with a name plate meets you and takes you to the desired place, such a transfer will cost a very reasonable amount of about 1.5 thousand rubles (look for it in the form below):

And now about public transport.

Unlike many European capitals, the Lisbon authorities have maintained the standard cost of tickets for public transport going to the airport terminal.

Method 1. Metro

In 2012, the red metro line was extended, and now the entrance to the Aeroporto metro station is located at the airport, without leaving the building. The subway ride takes 15 minutes to Oriente Station, 25 minutes to Cais do Sodre, where you can change to commuter trains.

Metro is the most inexpensive option when you need to get from the airport from 6.30 am to 1 am. A travel card costs €0.5 and a ticket starts from €1.45, depending on which travel card you choose. Here is an article about how to use the Lisbon metro.

The ticket machines have menus in English, and at the airport station assistants are always available if necessary. The purchased travel card is applied to the validator at the entrance and exit of the metro.

Children under 4 years old do not require a ticket; luggage is carried free in the Lisbon metro.

Method 2. Airbus

If you arrive in Lisbon between 7 am and 11 pm and are heading to one of the hotels in the center, it is convenient to take an airbus. Its stop is located directly opposite the exit.

This bus has two routes along the central streets of the city, where popular hotels and train stations are located. One runs from Lisbon Cais do Sodre station, departing every 20 minutes. On the second route, buses run every 40 minutes through the 7 Rios bus station to the business center of the capital. The shuttle ride takes 30-40 minutes. Where the bus is going is written on the glass. To get off at a stop, you need to press the “stop” button on the handrail.

Bus tickets are sold by the driver, and you can also buy them at the sales counter at the airport, at tourist offices or online at https://www.aerobus.pt/en-GB/Home-2.aspx.

The advantages of the Airbus are that with one daily ticket for 3.5 euros you can travel along the route an unlimited number of times and get a discount on an excursion on an open yellow tourist bus.

A group transfer (from 4 people) will cost less.

Method 3. Regular city buses

Regular city buses also run from the airport terminal to Lisbon - No. 5, 22, 44, 45, 8, 83. You can get to Cais do Sodre Railway Station on route No. 91, departing every 20 minutes from 7 am to 9 pm. The driver sells the tickets. You will not be able to board the buses with large luggage; there are restrictions on its size - no more than 50x40x20 cm.
