It's time to talk about the place where we spent the next 8 days. This is the Tyrrhenian coast or the Odyssey coast.
Actually - Anzio, it's small provincial town, which is located 40 kilometers from Rome on the coast Tyrrhenian Sea. It was founded by the Trojans after their arrival in the Lazio region, and almost immediately became an important commercial and cultural center region. According to legend, the founding of Anzio is attributed to Atheus, the son of Odysseus and the Greek sorceress Circe.

From about 338 BC. Anzio became a popular holiday destination and settlement for wealthy Roman patricians. The city was built up with palaces; the villas of Cicero, Caius Lucretius, and Caesar Augustus rose along the seashore. It was in Anzio that the most famous emperors were born Ancient Rome- Caligula and Nero. The sea port of the city is named after Nero. The legendary Villa of Nero, which has survived to this day, recalls the luxury of bygone times. In the distant past, Anzio (Anzium is the ancient Roman name of the city) was one of the best seaside resorts. The ancient philosopher Cicero wrote: “I prefer Anzio to Rome!”

Today's Anzio is a small residential town, consisting of two parts.
The first part contains the city itself and a small sea port. The second part of the city is a tourist area, where there are restaurants, bars, pubs, discos, and night clubs. Actually, we were in the second zone. A strip of wide sandy beaches with a total length of 12 km, framed by beautiful nature, stretches from Villa Nero to Villa dei Pini.
By the way, the Romans themselves usually come to modern Anzio on weekends to take a break from the rhythms big city and enjoy sea air and peace.

Last time I already described the Beauty Rafael hotel where we lived. Quite cute, we liked it. Maybe also because on the day of check-in it was my birthday, and we were given one of the best rooms, with its own attic loggia, living room and bedroom.
We really enjoyed having dinner in the attic. In the evenings (as well as early in the morning) it was not hot there, but warm. And very beautiful. From there we admired the sunset and sunrise. Such interesting flowers grew in pots in the attic; their leaves formed a “bud” at the top, like a rose. By the way, I took the shoot home, and it took root perfectly.

The beach on the Anzio coast is sandy and clean. The sea is not just clean, it is the purest! The water is clear and calm (we didn’t experience any storms). There are a lot of shells and little crabs scurrying around.

Sun beds and umbrellas - for money. I don't even know how much it costs. We didn't use it.
It is very good to relax on the coast with small children. It's pretty shallow there. Moreover, the shoal stretches tens of meters from the shore. The water is very, very salty, so it literally throws your body up like a float. Swimming is so easy - a pleasure!

There are some volcanic formations not far from the coast. Small islands with a surface resembling pumice. There are especially many crabs here.

Italian kids catch them here with nets.

There are many grottoes and mini-caves on the small islands.

Their surface is even more interesting. It is made from fossilized shells and mollusks. So interesting!

I really liked the sunset in Anzio. While you are climbing up the stairs from the beach, the sun is just setting before your eyes (and not slowly sinking, as in our country) below the horizon. Just - blunder! And he is not there. Very cool.

The locals in Anzio are friendly and welcoming. Of course, their business, for the most part, depends on tourists. The closer to the beach, the more expensive the products. If you go further, to larger supermarkets - the same thing, one and a half times cheaper.

The products are unique. I really liked the smoked meat and sausage. They sell them there huge size. The diameter of the sausage circle is 30-50 cm. They cut it right there, on a special machine - as much as you ask. The same goes for meat. The taste is amazing. And no soy!

The wines are different. Both cheaper and more expensive. When purchasing, you need to pay attention to the labeling.
The best wines are labeled DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). Actually, these same “controlata” and “guarantee” are what you should look for on the bottle if you are planning to buy vintage wine. DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) - it will be worse. But it's also good. Russian tourists jokingly call these wines “controlola” without a “guarantee”. Next come the “ordinary” wines. The best canteen is IGT. Worse - VDT.

In general, in Italy you can buy wine even for 2 euros per 2 liters. Of course, there is no time for markings here. But among our tourists, this wine also goes great. And no one seemed to complain. Even the cheapest wines were consumed in the morning without serious consequences. In any case, that’s what the wine lovers in our group assured us.

Red Chianti is considered the best wine. Tourists often take Limoncello as a gift. "Limoncello" is considered something of a local exotic. Like our vodka. It is quite strong, thick, viscous, similar to liqueur.

Italy has excellent cheeses. Be sure to try the local parmesan. In cafes you can eat a huge pizza that costs 10 euros (40 centimeters in diameter), and everywhere they offer pasta (pasta in different versions). In general, after Italy you won’t want to look at pizza and pasta anymore. So these dishes get boring during the trip.

Italy has excellent olive oil. It also varies. Different percentages and different spin rates. Interesting, but it also has an interesting smell. I bought olive oil in Russia, but it is not at all like what they sell in Italy. That’s why I brought a bottle of this miracle with me.

By the way, while walking around Anzio, you can see entire plantations of olive trees.
In general, Anzio is a quiet peaceful town. And relaxing here is a pleasure. And if you want to get out somewhere, there are so many nearby interesting places. This is Rome, and the Vatican, and Pompeii.
But more about that next time.
To be continued...

Eternal Rome is a city that cannot leave you indifferent. Amazing with endlessly changing monuments of all eras and styles. The permanent capital of Italy and the heart of Catholicism. A place where every stone breathes history, the corner of every house screams about how old it is and how much it has seen.

In the traditional sense, Rome is far from a beach resort. To be honest, the sea from the capital of Italy is at least half an hour away by metro. However, it is precisely these half an hour, which, in principle, can separate some outskirts of Barcelona from Mediterranean Sea, make many tourists think that there are beaches in Rome. And, in principle, they are not so far from the truth. Judge for yourself - a comfortable train goes for mere pennies (2-3 EUR) from the very center of Rome to the beautiful sandy coast nearest beach resort- Ostia.

If you draw the shortest line from the center with an imaginary ruler Italian capital to the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, it will be not much more than 25 km. And then - both to the right and to the left - kilometers and kilometers of sand, which are divided among excellent resorts. Most of them offer free public beaches, which are monitored by municipalities, which means that entry is free. There are also separate fenced clubs, for which you will have to pay 10-15 EUR to enter. As a reward for such “pennies”, tourists will be given a sunbed, an umbrella, the opportunity to use a shower and toilet stall, a DJ and a nice bar where they can order ice-cold white wine on a hot afternoon.

If you draw the shortest line with an imaginary ruler from the center of the Italian capital to the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, you will get not much more than 25 km.

So, if you want to go from Rome and the muddy waters of the Tiber to some more azure water to swim, freshen up and even sunbathe, it is best to pay attention to the following three beaches: Ostia, Nettuno and Sabaudia. The first one is the closest. It's not the best here best coast on the Tyrrhenian Sea, but it is literally under the nose of Rome. The second two are considered both more picturesque and cleaner, but it will take at least an hour to get there. Fortunately, in both cases the route will be direct, without transfers, directly from Rome Termini station to Nettuno, or by bus from the Laurentina metro station to Sabaudia. And for a ticket you will have to pay no more than 5 EUR one way.

Staying on one of the beaches overnight is not a bad idea. And Rome, with its magnificent collection, will not suffer much from a one-day absence of a tourist, and the traveler himself will be able to take a little rest from the abundance of beauty. But during the season, it is better to think about such desires in advance and book a hotel a little in advance. Otherwise, there is a high probability of being left without a room, or paying a lot of money for a modest room with a bed - this is a popular direction, and good hotels selling out like hot cakes.

  • Where to stay: It is most convenient to make excursion “forays” around Lazio from Rome. Alternatively, go with the miniature one thermal resort Fuji.
  • What to see: fabulous Rome, which is good at any time of the year, as well as the Vatican located in its heart. In addition, Lazio is notable for the ancient ruins of Tivoli and Ostia Antica, the Etruscan city of Tarquinia and numerous resort towns on the coast. If you have time, it’s worth going on an excursion to romantic Venice, the shopping capital of Milan or the magnificent
