When visiting Montenegro for the first time, as well as any other resort abroad, the question arises of how not to make a mistake when choosing a place to holiday with children and where to stay.

In terms of accommodation in Budva (the most expensive resort) during the peak season, even the simplest accommodation by the sea (in the form of one-room apartments, a small studio, a guesthouse room) will cost a lot if it is not taken care of in advance.

But this resort is most often recommended for beginners, explaining this choice with very convincing arguments: close to the airport (20 minutes by car), developed infrastructure (shops, medical offices, post office, discos, etc.), great beaches, Availability historical center with many attractions.

But there are also significant disadvantages - a lot of vacationers, noisy, not the cleanest sea. The resort with nightlife, bars, discos and clubs is more aimed at middle-aged tourists and party-going youth.

The picturesque and quiet town of Sveti Stefan (from Budva by bus can be reached in about 20 minutes), the moderately lively and fairly calm town of Petrovac (an hour's drive from Tivat airport), Becici, Rafailovici, Ulcinj are much more suitable.

Beach holidays with children in Montenegro

Montenegrin beaches are very different: sandy, rocky, covered with pebbles (small and large), with slabs and stones. There are more than a hundred of them in a small area. There are hotel beaches and municipal ones.

Most of the beaches are pebble, while sand makes up about 1/3 of the entire beach area. There is a natural large sandy beach in Ulcinj, sandy embankments - near the island-hotel Sveti Stefan, in Milocer, Becici and in some other places. What they have in common is that they are always clean.

For cleanliness and the best ecology Blue flags The Montenegrin beaches of Budva, Bar, Tivat, Herceg Novi, Ulcinj are noted, because there is nothing near them that would pollute the environment.

The coastal part of Montenegro is conventionally divided into three regions: Budva Riviera, Ulcinj Riviera and the resorts of the Bay of Kotor.

Budva Riviera

The Budva Riviera with the resorts of Budva, Bar, Sveti Stefan, Milocer, Becici, Petrovac, Sutomore and Rafailovici, which have the largest number of beaches, is the most popular and sought-after region among tourists.

The beaches here are predominantly pebbly and sandy and vary in color due to the different minerals they contain. There are also rocky ones with rocky areas among them.

Budva, with its abundance of daytime and nightlife entertainment (it’s not for nothing that it’s called the “Miami of Montenegro”), is considered the country’s tourist center and an ideal place for active rest. This is where most holidaymakers head. Families with children may find this resort somewhat noisy (although this also depends on the chosen area of the city for living).

There are several beaches within the city limits of the crowded resort. This is the most crowded and popular Mogren beach during the season, divided into two zones by a picturesque cliff with pebble and sandy areas with golden sand, which are connected by an underground passage, and the “Slavic Beach”, which occupies almost the entire city coast.

Family tourists can take a closer look at Guvance Beach, located on the southern outskirts of Budva on the way to Becici. Although it is considered relatively remote from the center, the beach leads in the amount of sun during the day, is considered the sunniest and is famous for its beautiful sunsets.

Kids will certainly enjoy the soft sand and comfortable entrance to the sea, the emerald vegetation on the shore, and the warm and clear water. The beach is miniature - its length is only about 150 meters. Getting to it is not difficult: you can reach it by walking, or you can take the wonderful mini-train that runs around Budva.

The Becici resort, located next to the crowded Budva (4 kilometers), is a real beach paradise. There are always a lot of people who want to relax here. Even the lowest prices for accommodation in apartments do not scare away tourists (although, of course, they are more affordable than in Budva itself).

Families with children are attracted by the secluded location, the proximity of Tivat airport (13 km) and the best beach in the country, covered with small pebbles and golden soft sand, almost 2 kilometers long. There are no piers here, so there is no danger from boats constantly scurrying back and forth.

Not far from Becici (1.5 km) is the village of Rafailovici (10 minutes from Budva) with stunning nature, turquoise sea and Kamenovo beach, located in a sunny bay. It is covered with small and soft White sand and pebbles.

The uncrowded, spacious Jaz beach in the vicinity of Budva (located in the village of the same name) is quite popular among tourists. It is a coastal kilometer-long strip of pure sand, gradually turning into small pebbles, and then (closer to Budva) large pebbles, stones and a rocky coast begin.

The beach is quite long and along it there are a large number of private boarding houses, hotels, campsites and guesthouses. Visually it is divided into a recreation area for nudists and an area for everyone else. Convenient for those who come on vacation by car.

Between the beaches of Jaz and Ploce there is a sandy shallow beach called Trsteno, convenient for swimming with children. The beach is small, the sand is fine as flour, but the water is clean. Smooth and gentle entry into the water. Located in a closed cozy bay. Tourists travel from Budva by bus. The disadvantage is that it is not very well equipped.

Ploce Beach is the farthest from Budva (20 minutes by bus). Located on a peninsula with access to the open sea. The coastline is mainly represented by slab terraces sloping down to the water. There is no sand at all, there is a small area with pebbles.

The entrance to the sea swimming areas is conveniently organized along special stone steps or stairs. The sea bottom is pebbly. The water is crystal clear, there is a beautiful coastal landscape with exotic plants (for example, you can find cacti on it). For small children there are shallow pools and playgrounds on the beach.

The beaches of Sveti Stefan and Milocer are expensive and prestigious holiday destinations. If the budget allows, they can undoubtedly be classified as resorts ideal for family holidays in Montenegro.

Sveti Stefan is a picturesque village, which is most often depicted on postcards with views of Montenegro, with cleanest beaches, located on both sides of a narrow isthmus connecting the coast with the hotel island, covered with small pebbles and pinkish-red sand, and a gently sloping entrance.

The resort can be roughly divided into the island of Sveti Stefan, on which luxury hotels are actually concentrated, built on the territory of buildings of the medieval period, and the village itself - a small fishing village connected by an artificial sand spit to the island, where you can find apartments, villas, and a hotel according to your budget .

The resort village of Milocer (6 km from Budva) is famous for its magnificent beaches, beautiful villas, tall pine trees and a park. Near the island of Sveti Stefan there is a small “Queen’s Beach” and nearby another sandy beach “Milocer” (also called “King’s Beach”).

With children you can live in a quieter place nearby - in Petrovac. Cozy, quiet Petrovac without noisy night entertainment is located in a calm, picturesque place (17 km from Budva) with a mild climate, with hills covered with pine trees and olive groves, with clear water in the sea, with rocky islands with a miniature chapel visible in the distance.

The beaches of this resort (there are two of them - the main one, stretching for 2 km with a charming promenade, and at some distance the Lucice beach) are covered with small pebbles and reddish sand. There is a good entrance to the sea, but almost immediately (after 4-5 meters) the depth begins.

Lucice beach is more picturesque, with a more convenient entrance and very small, sand-like pebbles (on the main beach in some areas there are huge stones when entering the water). On the Lucice beach there is organized for children water slide With sea water with a small pool carved into the stone. A little further (you can walk) is the Buryalitsa beach.

In Petrovac, families with children like to stay in apartments (if you book them in advance, they are inexpensive). This resort is often recommended for holidays with children in Montenegro also because it has a cozy and calm atmosphere, but not boring. A beautiful bay, rocky grottoes with secluded swimming areas, a medieval castle, an ancient fortress once built by the Venetians to frighten sea pirates, a stunning pine grove - all this makes Petrovac a tempting place to relax with a child.

The resort of Bar also has good pebble beaches. But in the city itself, due to the busy water traffic (boats, regular boats, and yachts are constantly cruising), swimming is not very comfortable. It is much more pleasant to do this in neighboring towns on sand and pebble beaches, which can be reached from Bar in a quarter of an hour.

Beach "Biserna obala" ("Pearl Coast") with fine sand with a pearlescent tint is located in the town of Canj, just north of Bar. This is one of the famous beaches in Montenegro.

The beach “Zlatna Obala” (“Golden Coast”) with golden sand and alluviums of small pebbles (analogous to the Bulgarian “Golden Sands”) belongs to the hotel. It is located in one bay next to the city beach in Sutomore, protected from the winds by pine and cypress trees on the mainland side.

Lost in a tiny cove between Bar and Sutomore is the secluded, small, picturesque “Red Beach”. It got its name because of the sand and pebbles of a reddish hue covering it (a mixture of sand with crushed corals). This is a convenient place to relax with children. It is not crowded here, it is almost always warm and calm.

Among the disadvantages is that it is located at a remote distance from Bar and getting there (if not by car) is inconvenient. Large sharp boulders also make it difficult to enter the water. Meet and sea urchins(although they are found all over the coast).

Between Sutomore and the Chan backwater near the Black Cape there is Malevik beach, mostly pebble, rocky in places with large stones in the water (you can’t swim without slippers). Of course, it is not very suitable for children. But it's unusual here pure water, and in the heat you can hide in the shade of nearby growing pines.

In the town of Uteha on the way from Bar to Ulcinj there are also several small sandy beaches.

Beaches of the Ulcinj Riviera

The Ulcinj Riviera, represented by a single city - Ulcinj - is another region of Montenegro, famous for its sandy beaches.

Ulcinj resort with turquoise water in the bay and famous beaches with gray basalt sand located in the very south of Montenegro. This resort is quite crowded, but not as crowded as in popular tourist places. It is also famous for its ecology.

Velika Plaža Beach (Big Beach) stretches along the coast with a 13-kilometer strip of sand, along which many hotels are located. It seems to have been created especially for children: shallow sea, magnificent landscapes, healing tiny sand enriched with minerals, a gentle entrance into the water with gradually increasing depth. The disadvantage is the proximity to the port.

The city's Small Beach is located as if inside the city itself. Concentrated here local restaurants and cafes, shops and discos.

Near Ulcinj there is Tropicana Beach, equipped with a children's amusement park and water attractions.

A beach with healing coral and fine shell sand, extremely soft to the touch, Ada Boyana Island is a continuation of the Big Beach, from which it is separated by a river. Nudists and surfers like to relax here on the island-reserve.

Resorts and beaches of the Bay of Kotor

The resorts of the Bay of Kotor, in addition to Kotor, include Tivat, Perast, Koštanica, Risan, Herceg Novi.

The peculiarity of this region is that in the Bay of Kotor, which cuts into the coast for 30 kilometers, there are no strong sea waves, high waves and storms, or dangerous strong currents, which makes swimming in the sea safe even for children. The water in the bay is warmer. But the climate is also quite hot.

In Kotor itself, the beaches are city, where swimming with children is not entirely comfortable (the sea is not so clean, there are stones and rocks). And in general this expensive city is not the best place in Montenegro for a beach holiday with children. But Kotor - Old city with a lot of interesting details, secrets and riddles, where you can introduce children to ancient history this region.

The beaches of the Hercegnovskaya Riviera are mostly rocky, which is not so comfortable for swimming, but they are more picturesque. It should also be taken into account that rocky beaches are often favored by sea urchins. However, in the Bay of Kotor there are also sand and pebble beaches, especially in the vicinity of Herceg Novi and Tivat.

Beaches of Tivat: Donja Lastva, Cape Seljanovo, Stara Racica, Kamelia - these are small equipped city beaches with concrete slabs and sandy areas. On the “Island of Flowers” (2 km from Tivat) there are sandy beaches.

The small sandy beach Plavi Horizonti in the Pržno Valley (12 km from Tivat at Hotel Blue Horizon), located in a calm quiet bay, where all year round the warmest days in Montenegro. Healing fine sand, shallow waters, clean water, green olive and pine groves - all this attracts families with children here.

Nearby is the beach in the town of Oblatno at the Almara Hotel Beach Club with comfortable umbrellas and sun loungers, a landscaped park, and club parties.

Herceg Novi – popular and lively resort Montenegro, but less noisy and cheaper than Budva or Tivat. Suitable for families with children, although the beaches at this resort cannot be called the best. Very often these are concrete slabs, and you need to get to sandy beaches by boat, for example, on the protected Lustica peninsula.

From Herceg Novi you can take a boat to the beach in the uncrowded, beautiful and cozy town of Rose. Actually, there are no beaches here as such: vacationers sunbathe on the embankment.

The beaches of Zhanica and Mirista, located on the shore, are pebble, which differ from most beaches in Montenegro in that they go straight out into the open sea. From them you can admire a wonderful view of the fortress on the island of Maiula. You can get here from Herceg Novi by boat for a small fee.

Montenegro attracts with its pristine beaches and many resort towns for different tastes and budgets. And not only that. The beauty of this country lies in its numerous bays and bays, regal mountains, amazing nature, medieval architecture, historical monuments and a unique culture.

Initially, in this article we wanted to list all existing beaches in Montenegro. But when we started writing it, we realized that we couldn’t cope:

  • The length of the coastline of Montenegro is about 73 kilometers.
  • And almost all of it is divided into beaches: small and large; sand, pebble and concrete; urban, private, wild and nudist.
  • The number of popular beaches alone has long exceeded a hundred (117, to be exact).

Therefore, in this article we decided to write first of all about the general features of Montenegrin beaches and the characteristic differences between beaches on different Rivieras. By the way, a little further in the article, in the Riviera section, you can admire unique three-dimensional panoramas.

We will list the beaches themselves in relation to a specific city or Riviera.

Laws on beaches in Montenegro: cleaning and sunbeds

Montenegro is a country that lives exclusively on tourism. Therefore, the convenience of tourists is treated with the utmost care. Let's look at the beach laws:

  1. The entire coastline is exclusively state property. There are practically no private beaches in Montenegro.
  2. The state often leases beaches, but the requirements for rented beaches are very serious.
  3. By law, beaches are cleaned every day during the tourist season. In reality - twice a day, morning and evening.
  4. No more than 50% of the beach area can be occupied by paid sun loungers. The rest of the place is for vacationers with a towel.
  5. On hotel grounds, the entire beach may be filled with sun loungers, but then they are free.
  6. Entrance to any beach and access to the sea is free for everyone. You can't even build decorative fences.

These laws are violated very rarely. And in exceptional cases: it is generally closed to visitors (you can only get there on an excursion or by booking a table in a restaurant), some of the beaches nearby are paid (you will have to buy a sunbed), you can also get to the King’s beach near Villa Milocer only by paying for sunbeds (70 euros per set) and Queen's Beach is for villa guests only. There are plenty of free beaches nearby.

But all these exceptions apply only to some elite beaches for very rich people.

As a conclusion: no matter where you vacation, you can easily find a free and comfortable beach for relaxation.

Prices on the beaches - how much does a sunbed and umbrella cost?

Prices on the beaches depend greatly on how busy they are. The more vacationers, the more expensive. Sun loungers are often sold in sets of 2 sun loungers and an umbrella.

Types of beaches in Montenegro: sandy, pebble and concrete.

There are almost no sandy beaches in Montenegro. They can only be found in the south of the country, near Ultsyn - this is famous Velika Plaza (Big Beach).

All other beaches are pebble, mixed or concrete (on pontoons). No matter how many reviews or descriptions of hotels/beaches they write about soft sand, you still can’t believe it. Sand may be imported. It is usually delivered in May, and by July or August it is washed away.

You shouldn’t expect that a beach with imported sand will be sandy based on tourist reviews or photos - sand may be brought to the beach one year, but not the next.

How do you get “sandy beaches” in Montenegro?

The shore of almost any natural beach in Montenegro is rocky and uneven. Well, what did you want from a country of mountains by the sea?

This is inconvenient for tourists. In order to somehow rectify the situation, beach tenants bring here whole truckloads of small pebbles and sand in the spring. Pebbles are poured from below, sand from above.

By the end of July, beginning of August, the sand is washed away and mixed with pebbles. It turns out to be a sand and pebble beach. The pebbles will be the size of buckwheat or peas.

Pros of sand and pebble beaches

Have you ever wondered why you need sand on the beach? Especially if there are no children with you, and you yourself have long since passed the age when you make beads.

Sandy beaches next to all their advantages also have a lot of disadvantages. Sand constantly gets into bags and towels, flies into your eyes, and raises turbidity and dirt into the sea.

Sand and pebble beaches are some of the most comfortable in the world. Especially if you relax on sun loungers. Clean water and the absence of “sand whirlwinds” await you. And various debris that is dangerous for feet is much more noticeable on pebbles.

Concrete beaches in Montenegro.

Concrete beaches are also a great option. This is when there are sun loungers on the beach, and we go down into the water along a ladder or steps.

Does it cause hostility? At first we did too. Exactly until the moment we realized that it was like swimming in a pool, but at the same time in real sea water.

Such beaches are convenient for people who can swim and prefer to pay for sunbeds. Although we often saw vacationers with a towel on concrete beaches. Most often in and.

A definite advantage of this option is the absence of sand getting into your eyes, mouth, towel and bag and steep descents - you do not have to go several tens of meters into the sea.

The most common such beaches are in and. The largest and most famous is Ploce beach, which is located 12 km from. We recommend: the beach is beautiful, well equipped and not too expensive.

Rivieras in Montenegro

In Montenegro, beaches are usually divided into Rivieras based on the name of the nearest large city. Each Riviera has its own advantages and disadvantages, which are worth considering when you choose your future holiday destination. Let's try to briefly go over the main points:

Budva Riviera

The following cities are usually included in the Budva Riviera:

  • - one of the most ;
  • and Milocher - luxury recreation centers;
  • Petrovac is a resort considered healing due to its olive and pine groves;
  • and - small resort villages, which back in 1935 won the Grand Prix for the most beautiful beach in Europe.
  • Sutomore is one of the cheapest resorts in Montenegro. There are good sand and pebble beaches here, but there are a lot of tourists.

We will look at the beaches of Sutomore and their surroundings from a bird's eye view:

The Budva Riviera is considered one of the most famous and popular in Montenegro and is famous primarily for its sand and pebble beaches(sand is often imported).

The beaches in Boka Kotorska are mostly concrete. There are practically no sand and pebble options. This is partially compensated by the very beautiful scenery around - mountains surround the bay on all sides.

We will admire the bay from the city pier. By the way, such tourist liners enter the harbor very, very often.

Herceg-Nova Riviera

There is confusion on the Internet with cities belonging to the Hercegnovskaya Riviera. For some reason, they often include Risan, which is located on the territory of the community and quite far from. With confidence, the Herceg Novi Riviera includes:

  • - marvelous beautiful city on the slope low mountain, which is often called the botanical garden of Montenegro.
  • Igalo is a health resort in Montenegro. Here you can enjoy mineral waters and healing mud.
  • Meline
  • Kumbor

The beaches of the Herceg-Novska Riviera are small, but quite diverse. Here, concrete beaches are starting to come across more and more often, and sometimes sand and pebble options with imported sand. There are also several natural pebble beaches (for example,).

The beaches of Ulcinj are covered with basalt sand. It is dark gray in color and is considered healing. A whole complex of minerals (iodine, calcium salts and carbonates) in such sand have a beneficial effect on the musculoskeletal system.

Theoretically, the beach season on the Ulcinj Riviera lasts for six months - from April to November, but we did not dare to test this statement personally.

Montenegro is an excellent option for a quality holiday. This country has long attracted fans of clean ecology and good beaches. If you are going to Montenegro for the first time, you are probably concerned about the condition of the beaches at the country’s resorts.

Are there sandy beaches in Montenegro?

If you want to relax in Montenegro on a sandy beach, then you should know some of the country’s peculiarities. This is a mountainous area, which is located near the coast. That's why there are many capes and bays here.

Sandy beaches, formed naturally, are available only behind Ulcinj (in the south of the coast). There is a great place there - Velika Plaza or Big Beach, which occupies a huge area.

The rest of the coast is covered with large pebbles and intersected by rocks. Such a natural coating is not very impressive to others. For this reason, tenants annually bring small pebbles and sand to their beaches.

Thus, almost all beaches in Montenegro have imported sand. Usually the pebbles are covered with sand, and at the end of the season it is mixed well with it. Some of the sand is washed into the sea.

Sea waves help crush large pebbles to the size of grains of buckwheat. The result is a special stone-sand mixture that covers the coast.

Where are the sandy beaches in Montenegro?

Sandy beaches are concentrated in the southern part of the country (Ulcinj Riviera). The first place in popularity is occupied by the Big Beach. There are no pebbles on the Budva Riviera - Plavi Horizonti beach.

There are sandy beaches with imported sand in the following settlements: Petrovac, Becici, Stoliv, Djenovici, Igalo, Muo, etc.

Montenegro – hotels with sandy beaches

Excellent holidays are offered by hotels located in the area famous resorts: Budva, Herceg Novi, Petrovac, Ulcinj, Sveti Stefan.

Sand and pebbles are the most comfortable option for beaches in Montenegro. Thanks to this coating, the sea in the coastal strip remains clean. There is no cloudy suspension in the water, and there are no sand whirlwinds on the coast. When returning from the beach, you will not shake sand out of your clothes and bag.

We list the hotels located close to the natural sandy beach in the city of Ulcinj:

  1. SENATOR 4*HOTEL. This is the most respectable hotel that welcomes guests around the clock. It has its own swimming pool, terrace, parking and garage.
