Since the Crimea Peninsula joined Russia, its popularity as a summer resort among our compatriots has increased sharply. In fact, the number of my acquaintances and friends who want to visit it has increased several times over the past two years. Just guys, please don’t touch on the political side of the issue, I’m just writing in accordance with my point of view, which may not coincide with yours.

Believe it or not, the idea of visiting the city of Kerch appeared a little earlier than the drastic political events that occurred in our lives.

How to get to Kerch.

How to get to Kerch is the first question that worries any traveler who has decided to visit this city for the first time. Taking into account the fact that the previously familiar route through Ukraine to this moment is not available to our citizens, we have to look for alternative options.

Today there are several of them - buy train tickets to Kerch, or come by your own car. It will not be possible to buy air tickets to Kerch, since the only airports in Crimea are in Simferopol and Sevastopol. The distance from these cities is more than 200 kilometers, which makes this method not very convenient (not everyone is ready to spend a few more hours on the bus after a flight).

In fact, the trip by private car to the city of Kerch, which we chose, also has a certain disadvantage: a ferry crossing. For us personally, it took about 18 hours there, and only 1.5-2 hours back. There was no storm warning at that time. Everything was in working order. The reason for this delay was the usual influx of tourists.

However, intensive work is now underway to resolve this problem. For example, on the official website (http://www.parom24.ru/) it became possible to track the movement of ferries using satellite data.

A service for electronic queuing and booking ferry tickets to Kerch on the same website has also been launched.

I can’t say anything about the operation of this service yet, since I haven’t had to use it. However, I really hope that it will make things easier independent travelers and will solve the problem of standing for many hours at the ferry crossing.

Where to stay in Kerch?

By and large, the instructions for finding accommodation in Kerch are no different from those on our Black Sea coast. You can study the offers of Internet sites for a very long time and book something in advance, or you can get to the place and look at apartments and flats in Kerch in “real time”.

By and large, only one thing decides this: if you are suddenly delayed at the crossing due to a storm or other problems, then in the middle of the night the owners in the private sector are unlikely to be happy with you. In this case, you risk spending the night in the car until the morning. And after a long journey, this is a rather dubious pleasure.

That is why I decided on my place of residence in advance.

Since my goal this time was to combine beach holiday and sightseeing in Kerch, then housing had to meet several criteria.

Firstly, we wanted to find a secluded place with clean water and a nice beach.

Secondly, he must have good transport connection with the city.

Having habitually turned to the website www.booking.com, I began a search, which, this time, was short-lived.

To be honest, the “Buhta” cottage complex we chose is not located directly in the city of Kerch itself (the distance is about 13 km). However, we decided that by car this is not such a big problem for us.

But this complex has two of its own sandy beaches with the purest water.

The area is very clean and picturesque.

The cost of living cost us about 1800 rubles per cottage for two per day. All amenities and hot water there were in the house.

Cape Cormorant is located nearby, which allowed us, while relaxing on the beach, to watch these birds hunt for fish.

On the territory of the complex you can order meals, and then every day home-cooked food will be prepared for you.

In addition, here we were fed very tasty and inexpensive berries.

I want to admit that for me this place of residence is a real heavenly holiday. And tourists who prefer privacy to noisy discos will understand me on this.

What to see in Kerch

The city of Kerch is very ancient, with more than thousand years of history. During its existence, the Greek civilization also visited here, the Roman emperors managed it, and the Turks captured it. Thus, the history of the city of Kerch is mixed with so many cultures and religions that this could not but leave an imprint on its historical heritage.

Locals they told us that in the city and its environs such a huge amount of archaeological treasures has been preserved, and so little attention has been paid to their excavation, that to this day, during heavy rains, Greek coins and amphorae float from the hills.

One of the main attractions of the city of Kerch is Great Mithridates Staircase. It acts as a kind of symbol of the city; it is what all tourists strive to see first.

There really is something to see here. The staircase climbs Mount Mithridates to its very top.

From the top there is an excellent view of the sea and the city of Kerch. Previously, there was a museum of antiquities here, but during the Crimean War, it was destroyed, as well as the staircase itself. The museum was never restored.

At the very foot of Mount Mithridates there is another leading attraction of the city of Kerch - Church of John the Baptist. This architectural monument is considered the most ancient temple Christian world throughout Europe! True, the exact date of its foundation, unfortunately, is not known. But they roughly call it the eighth or ninth century.

Nearby is one of the oldest theaters in Crimea - Pushkin Theater. Unfortunately, no performances were held in the theater building itself, as restoration work was being carried out there. However, the acting troupe exists, and we even managed to attend their production of the rock opera “Juno and Avos”.

To be honest, the city center of Kerch as a whole makes a very pleasant impression.

In some places you even get the feeling that you are walking through a European city.

An interesting attraction of Kerch, located outside its center, is the ancient Yeni-Kale fortress (translated from Turkish as “New Fortress”).

It is a pity that today the work to restore this ancient fortress were not carried out. It is interesting to visit, but it is not half as attractive to tourists as the restored fortress in Sudak. The only plus is that entry here is always free and free.

Only elements of the walls and some towers have been preserved.

There is hope that over time, the strength and means will still be found to restore this historical monument.

The city of Kerch is very original and interesting. Unfortunately, its restoration and preservation requires serious time and material costs. I would like to believe that returning here in a few years, any visitor will be able to say with satisfaction that the thousand-year-old city seems to have been reborn.

Which every Russian knows, and which have already been hackneyed and traveled far and wide. We are going to Crimea by car, to explore new territories, to look at the Crimean Bridge, which we “waited and waited for, and finally got to see!”

Why did I go to Crimea by car across the Crimean Bridge?

Of course, having a personal car on vacation gives you a lot of advantages - you are not dependent on transport and can independently visit any corner of the peninsula at the right time. That's why I prefer car holidays. A trip to Crimea by car was nevertheless predetermined by the opening of the Crimean Bridge on May 16, 2018. Of course, I wanted to go to Crimea, but I could go next year, and after 2 years. And here is the bridge! Therefore it was decided must go.

But first you need to be patient and overcome the M-4 highway, or simply “Don”, to the very end, which, unlike some well-known roads, is considered one of the best in Russia. But there is a huge advantage - now when traveling to Crimea by car you don’t need a crossing, which is a waste of money and time in line for loading. We left on May 1st. It's good that the weather turned out to be good. In general, spring this year turned out to be hot, both in Crimea and in Moscow.

It is best to go to Crimea by car in 2019, as you can visit a lot of beautiful and unique places! See the Crimean Bridge, which can be seen even from space! Touch the legendary construction site of the century. A trip to Crimea by car from Moscow, in addition to saving money, is also attractive because you can take all the necessary things with you.

The main expenses on the road to Crimea by car are related to the car, overnight accommodation (if you don’t want to sleep in the car) and food on the road. Everyone may have a different amount, which depends on the fuel consumption of the car and the number of people.

How long to get to Crimea by car: travel time

You can get to the peninsula without stopping, leaving Moscow early in the morning, as our friend did. The Moscow-Crimea trip by car to Kerch took him until the evening, and at 10 p.m. he had already crossed the Crimean Bridge. But in this case, you should better calculate your time and energy, because not all points of Crimea can be reached in a day. Especially if your hotel is located somewhere in Sevastopol or Yalta, where it’s quite a long drive from Kerch.

How long does it take to travel from Moscow to Crimea? Since we stopped for the night along the way, the time it took for us to travel to Crimea by car from Moscow was:

  • We left Moscow at 4 am;
  • At 10 am we drove through Voronezh;
  • At 15 o'clock - Rostov-on-Don;
  • Arrived in Timashevsk at 18.00, overnight at the hotel;
  • In the morning at 7 o'clock we went to the bridge and reached Kerch by 10:30;
  • The road from Kerch to Yalta took us 5 hours, because we were lucky enough to encounter a strong wind, through which we drove all the way to Yalta. At 15:30 we arrived in Yalta.

We went home at 7 am from Sevastopol. Almost at midnight we arrived at the Voronezh hotel. There was, of course, the opportunity to spend the night in Rostov-on-Don, but in order to get to Moscow early and avoid the crowds of summer residents, we decided to go to Voronezh. Already at 12 o'clock in the afternoon we entered the Moscow Ring Road.

Friends, leave reviews about your trip to Crimea by car in the comments! There you can also read reports for 2019 from our readers. And for previous years too.

Trip to Crimea by car 2019: overnight stay along the way

This is our first trip to Crimea by car from Moscow. The total distance to the crossing is 1500 kilometers, from Kerch to Yalta - 290 km. In general, you can perform a rapid forced march and not spend the night on the road at all, but not everyone is able to withstand this. The most important thing is to get out of the Moscow Ring Road on the M-4 as early as possible, and then the road will seem easier.

On the way to Crimea by car in 2019, you can drop into several large cities, which many travelers, like us, will find interesting. The most popular places for an overnight stay on the way there from Moscow - Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Novocherkassk, Rostov-on-Don and Timashevsk. You can find a decent overnight stay there. Kamensk-Shakhtinsky is the very first city along the way; here you can find inexpensive housing. Novocherkassk is not far from Rostov-on-Don, but prices are much lower. Rostov-on-Don - a huge amount of housing, but the highest prices. Timashevsk is closer to Crimea, there is little housing, but it is inexpensive.

The biggest traffic jam is during the day, and the greatest freedom is at night and very early in the morning. We decided that we would not stop on our next trip to Crimea by car and would go straight to Kerch, so as not to waste extra time and start relaxing as early as possible.

On the way back you can stop in Voronezh. There are many hotels and different price categories. The location for an overnight stay is very convenient.

Car trip to Crimea in 2019: Crimean Bridge

This was the most awaited part of the trip, I really wanted to be among the first. Directions by Crimean bridge free, travel 19 km, i.e. about 20 minutes on brand new smooth asphalt. The speed on the bridge is up to 90 km/h, but you cannot stop. There are a lot of cameras, you can immediately get a fine. There are no pedestrian zones on the bridge either. The most beautiful part is the fairway, it looks like a still from some cool movie.

There are a lot of cars, but there are no traffic jams. You feel like you’re on the Moscow Ring Road, only there are fewer lanes, 2 in each direction. Most of the Crimean Bridge runs on land. You won’t be able to admire the views from the bridge - almost everything is covered with noise barriers. On the way back you can watch the construction of the railway bridge, it will be on the right. The bridge to Crimea is really long, the longest structure in Russia. It can also withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake. In general, our team did their best.

Before the opening of the bridge, the trip to Crimea by car with the crossing was quite sad, there were stories on the Internet about how people waited for 40 hours. Not always, of course, but this also happened. Now I have only one concern - the narrow roads of Crimea will not withstand such a flow of motorists.

By the way, there are now security posts at the entrance to the bridge and selectively stopping cars. Previously, every car was inspected, which greatly delayed the line.

Road to Crimea by car 2019: M-4 Don highway at the beginning of the holiday season

This is not the first time we have driven along the M-4 highway on a trip from Moscow to Crimea by car - the previous 2 years in the summer we went on holiday in the same way, but in Krasnodar region. The road surface itself becomes better with each of our trips to the sea, and traffic jams become less frequent if there are no accidents.

Currently, there are 3 places where you can get into a traffic jam on the way to Crimea by car 2019. But knowing some tricks, you can avoid them, saving precious time:

1. The first place where traffic jams often occur is near the village of Losevo Voronezh region. Many who travel to the sea along the M-4 are familiar with this place. When we went for the first time in the afternoon, we stood there for at least an hour. Until lunch, oddly enough, the road is clear. Local residents offer to show drivers a bypass route for money. But in order to avoid paying 500 rubles, it is better to bypass the traffic jam through neighboring villages.

2. The next traffic difficulty is a large section of the road in front of Rostov-on-Don, where serious work is underway. Of course, this contributes to regular traffic jams, and the Aksai region generally stands still. We cheated and drove next to the road behind the fence behind another car. The bulk of the cars probably stood there for more than one hour.
You can get around all this action through Novoshakhtinsk if you are coming from Moscow. Then you can get to Novocherkassk.

We drove back through Aksai and got into a small traffic jam, but we didn’t stand there for long. The renovations are being carried out very vigorously and will probably be completed by the end of the summer season.

3. The large railway crossing in Timashevsk is our third possible obstacle. On the way to sea coast, many encounter traffic jams at this very crossing. Yandex Navigator showed us a detour, but nevertheless, the number of cars stubbornly standing at this turn is impressive. Locals, as it is not surprising, offer drivers here too for a nominal fee of 500 rubles to show them another way. The detour itself will pass through the city, which can be reached through a crossing a little further than this.

In general, the M-4 Don is an excellent track. The road to Crimea by car in 2019 from Moscow will not be tiring even for a beginner, the surface is smooth and even, there are no extreme sections. This does not apply to many areas of the Black Sea region, for example, a fairly complex serpentine road near Sochi. But for those who are traveling to Crimea, Tuapse, Anapa, these tips will help reduce travel time somewhat. Even in the event of an unforeseen situation, you can find an experienced local driver who will not neglect detours, even if not the most obvious ones.

New on the M-4 Don highway

On the way there was once another difficult gap in the Voronezh region - called Novaya Usman, where we had to make our way through dust and traffic jams, albeit small ones. But there were a lot of eateries where you can have a tasty and inexpensive snack or just sit in cozy atmosphere, as in the Gramophone cafe, for example. Now there is a section of a toll road around Novaya Usman, which will allow you to gain about half an hour of travel time.

Crimean roads

In general, we did not encounter any very bad roads. Only in the cities, as almost everywhere else, were there parts of the streets with potholes. Intercity communication is good, the roads are new, there are almost no cameras. On south coast, all the way to Sevastopol, there is a slightly winding road, but it’s not scary to drive along it.

Having visited the main roads of the peninsula, we encountered many ups and downs from Alushta to Feodosia. It doesn't look that scary, but it doesn't hurt to be careful in this area. However, you can also go around through Simferopol. The local landscapes and reliefs are, of course, impressive. You can safely go by car to Crimea, it’s worth it.

Food, gas stations and other amenities on the M-4

As a rule, the further gas stations are from regional centers, the smaller they are, but the more cars there are. This obviously leads to queues at the cash register, in the toilet, in the cafe. Therefore, when traveling to Crimea by car in 2019, it is better to immediately fill the car to capacity with fuel at the beginning of the route in the Moscow region. There you can find the most popular gas stations with a high level of service - Shell, Tatneft, Lukoil and others. If we manage to avoid traffic jams, then this is enough for us to get to Voronezh, where we can refuel without annoying queues.

But if it turns out that you still need to refuel on the way, then it is better to do it at Rosneft, where there is good quality fuel and fast service. It is strange that Gazprom loyalty cards do not work outside the Moscow region at all, and the food and coffee are of noticeably low quality. One gets the feeling that this is not Gazprom at all, but only a big name. We do not recommend using local or unknown gas stations; it may cost you more. Some of them have an absurd level of service, where fuel and food are paid for in separate checks or in a separate queue. So I managed to get into such a double queue, when everything is paid separately. Therefore, it is better to take everything with you in advance.
